I live by my mothers suggestions:
1) don't dust - if you don't disturb it won't look "dusty" and soon it you will have "new gray" furniture.
2) dishes only need to be washed when you need more to serve dinner - a service of eight will last four days since there is only my husband and myself to worry about these days
3) the bed only needs to be made when company comes but the sheets need washing every week.

Hope this helps. Barbara W

WHAT?! Are we supposed to make a choice? Well, you know which one wins.

Arleners 03-13-2011 06:38 PM

Here is a poem that someone put on an embroidered wall hanging
Cleaning and dusting can wait til tomorrow
for babies grow up I've learnt to my sorrow
So quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

My babies are all grown up, no one died from oven crud poisioning so now I use that phiosophy about my quilting.

Other than hiring a maid, no clue. I am so sick of housecleaning and cooking. When do I really get to retire. Yes I have to work it all around my quilting which I want to do 24/7.

Julianna 03-13-2011 06:42 PM

Embroider this to hang in your home and remember it in your brain ......."Dull women have immaculate homes! :)

I try to keep the bathroom and kitchen really nice and clean but I don't sweat the rest of the house too much. My husband has been doing the vacuming and moping since I had shoulder and hip surgeries and he's happy to continue so I'm glad he's willing to do these things for me.

Ms Elaine Va 03-13-2011 07:12 PM

I went to the FLYLADY site and I'm going to start the routine on Monday. I was better at keeping things straight when I had a small child and worked 60 hrs a week. Retirement seems to cause me to put things off. The downstairs "public areas" are always neat and clean. The 2nd floor is messy because we keep the fishing and quilting stuff in the extra bedrooms. Now I'm even overflowing into the nice quest room.
Quilts are nice. BUT, I have to decide what to do with old family pics. etc. I don't want my son to have to go through what my brothers & I did cleaning out our parents house. They had things stashed away where it didn't show but when you have to pull it out and look at everything! It took us almost 2 years of weekends.

Jeannie t you have a really good excuse to do housework. Me - well no, my house isn't for sale, so I have a fantastic excuse, not to worry about it and try and enjoy my retirement. lol.

I should try "playing my house is for sale" I bet that would help Thanks Jeannie!

LadyCougar 03-13-2011 07:41 PM

Get your darling husband to do it. That's what I do.

Dee 03-13-2011 08:08 PM

Dirt and dust will be here long after we're gone-so enjoy today and don't worry-be happy.

svenskaflicka1 03-13-2011 08:22 PM

i work full time, so when i get a day off, housecleaning is the furthest thing from my mind. i always remember a line from "andy capp", that found mrs capp on her knees, scrubbing the floor, then doing dishes, then sweeping, doing laundry, putting groceries away, and andy, walking past saying, "housework, done properly, can kill you." i have no desire to die a premature death. i consider dust a protective coating for the furniture, and a good indicator if a stranger has been in the house. you know--fingerprints!

ladyredhawk 03-13-2011 08:45 PM

House work??????? I'm not sure what your talking about. I have a path to my sewing machine what more do I need, lol.

I have a full-time (60 hours a week) sales job, so I just crash when I get home. I'm also on the road about 4 months out of the year. My quilting is my sanity. My husband of 36 years just clears the decks for me. Cooks, cleans, grocery shops, and does his own laundry. Has a fresh pot of coffee on when I get home. Takes care of my car. I had cleaning ladies for about 25 years when the girls were growing up, same job, same hectic schedule. It was lovely. But we downsized when the girls left for husbands, and everything does not have to be perfect all the time. The best thing about having someone clean the house for you is that it all gets cleaned at once.

slk350 03-13-2011 09:34 PM

I have a cross stitched saying over the door:
Quilting Forever, Housework Whenever
I try to live by that !! LOL I do put quilting and other sewing aside when I'm expecting guests, THEN SUPERCLEAN

Highmtn 03-13-2011 09:50 PM

I've heard about this FlyLady website... guess I'll have to see what it's all about.

katigirl 03-13-2011 10:54 PM

Are you volunteering? lol.

Good idea - will have to use. I do the dishes at night when watching prime time tv, every commercial I do as much as I can (how come there is so many for such a family of 3? and an awful lot of long commercials)

That's how I do dishes also. The commercials are getting longer and longer (or I'm getting better and better at it)

When the dust gets too thick in the living room, DH grabs a swiffer wand and dusts off the TV.

I recently re-joined FlyLady.com. It's amazing what you can accomplish in 15minutes. Then it's back to quilting!

Hi Millie: Funny that you should ask if anyone ever heard "they kept a really clean house" at a funeral...my uncle's funeral was Thursday and the pastor said those very words about how my aunt and uncle kept their home, yard, and cars! Before last week, I had never heard that at a funeral either.

I used to stress over the house then I had teenagers and now they are grown evryone can clean what they mess up. I do major cleaning every once and a while but now I do a little housework and the spend the rest of the time in my sewing room.

I bought a Mint floor cleaning machine. It comes with two different pads one for dusting the floor and the other for mopping. It works with GPS, so it directs the machine where to clean. Just push two little buttons on the Mint and your floors are done. One of the best purchases I've ever made, especially with two long-haired cats in the house!

<My Grandparents house, barn, chicken coop, coal shed, etc. were full of items saved for years.Grandpa ran the general store in town and when he retired the new owner didn't want "all that old stuff" so Grandpa brought it home. I know what you mean about taking a long time to sort and clear. We also had a great auction. We had to ask other older people what some things were as we didn't know. It was certainly an interesting history lesson. But I am not leaving that chore to my children. If they want something now they get it.

Somebunny 03-14-2011 06:56 AM

My floors get cleaned when I need to lay out a quilt and sandwhich it. So the faster I get that quilt done the faster that floor gets attention. I cook now and again, but my husband has learned to fend for himself when I'm involved. The rest of the house gets a cleaning when I feel like it and always before those well expected visits from family and friends. So it all works out.

DeniseP 03-14-2011 07:13 AM

I try to make a list in the morning of the things that I should do during the day. I sew for a living so quilting for pleasure is usually done on weekends, but sometimes it just sneaks out during the workday and takes over. I like to get a couple of loads of laundry washed and hung and try to get the dishwasher unloaded and reloaded. Also I enlist the help of my 17 year old son. He is not always happy to do chores, but will do them if I ask.

DeniseP 03-14-2011 07:14 AM

Forgot to add one thing. Staying away from the computer really helps to get housework and quilting done!

Boy! Isn't that the truth!

quiltingb1 03-14-2011 08:42 AM

I try to make quilting like a necessity on weekdays while DH is at work. Mornings are for chores and errands but afternoons are mine for quilting. So at least 5 days a week I have 3-4 hrs a day to quilt and my housework gets done in the mornings. And then evenings and weekends is when I do handwork.

Nancy Ingham 03-14-2011 09:13 AM

This subject reminds me.....DUST IF YOU MUST.....

A house becomes a home when you can write “I love you” on the furniture. I used to spend at least 8 hours every weekend making sure things were just perfect, in case someone came over. Finally I realized one day that no-one came over; they were all out living life and having fun! Now, when people visit, I don’t have to explain the condition of my home. They are more interested in hearing about the things I’ve been doing while I was away living life and having fun.

If you haven’t figured this out yet, please heed this advice. Life is short. Enjoy it!

Dust if you must…..but wouldn’t it be better to paint a picture or write a letter, bake cookies and lick the spoon, plant a seed, quilt, or ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust is you must…..but the world’s out there with the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair, a flutter of snow, a shower of rain.

This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must…..but bear in mind, old age will come and it’s not kind. And when you go, and go you must, you yourself will make more dust!

quilterpam 03-14-2011 09:15 AM

Well I decided to try the 15 minutes at a time. I got the kitchen timer, and then took 20 minutes to decide where to start! I must say though that my bed is clear of dust bunnies under it and the bedroom floor is clean. When the buzzer went off, I got on here to tell everyone the news :-D :-D

missgigglewings 03-14-2011 09:52 AM

My family can clean when I am gone...and they get to divide my finished quilts between them!

I believe that's a fair exchange!

Katiequiltsalot 03-14-2011 09:59 AM

I work the night shift, so that in itself makes it hard to get things done.I do laundry on my day off,I cook daily, but only one meal a day.Which, is up to Hubby, if he wants breakfast,it's biscuits and gravy. If dinner roast and potatoes, and so on.He will do dishes, and his on laundry.I do the laundry for the house, towels, sheets, stuff like that.He takes care of the mowing and outside work.I take care of spring cleaning. We share everything. Some times he will cook on my days off.He is proud of my quilting, and brags on me to his friends. But he doesn't get it about the stash yet.I try to tell him it's like his tools.I have to have the tools to do the job right. He is a keeper even after 36 years

csbair 03-14-2011 10:14 AM

When I retired I kept my cleaning ladies. They come once every two weeks. They do in two and a half hours what would take me two weeks to do. I call them my white tornadoes. They do a great job and I feel justified. I owe it to myself. Then I can quilt until my hubby complains I'm ignoring him. (Now I need to get a sitter for him and all would be perfect.)
