Any ideas how to add the curved flying gees to the border of my faceted jewel quilt? I have thought of continuing the paper piecing to add the curved pieces, or maybe I should precut them, similar to drunkard's pathway. Or just bind the edges of the flying geese and stitch them on a plain piece of fabric.

I recently saw a picture of this but now can't remember where! It was really stunning.

How I'd do it:

Paper piece the curved flying geese piece.

and then applique it to the border -you can remove the excess border fabric underneath after.

The applique can be done many different ways -
hand stitch it applique it down
machine stitch it down with a small zigzag - after you've turned the seam under.

??? -
is the sky of the geese the same color as the border background fabric?

If it's the same, depending on the width of the border and FG, I might do it a bit differently.

I just don't really like all those seams on the border pieces.

I wanted to make them in curved sections. The difficulty is in making them so they come out the length I need. Sides are 57" and length is 84". The design I found is 9" from end to end. I have found a magazine article in the American Quilt Guild magazine where you free form draw a curve and then divide into sections. Mark the half way point between the sides of the curve and make each flying geese in its section. I have done this and it looks like it is going to work. Have pictures to post soon.
