how big do I cut

I need a finished block to be 16" x16". Do I cut my block 16 1/2" x16 1/2" which will allow for a 1/4" seam on all 4 sides?

providing you're not planning to cut that block into smaller pieces, 16 1/2 seems correct to me. are you new to this hobby?

Hi Gay. Ive been sewing about 5 years mostly learning on my own. I cant comprehend what I read for the most part, but I am making a dresden star and the finished blocks are 16 x 16 and I didnt know for sure if It includes the seam allowance. Thank you for replying so quick.

For a finished block of 16 inches your maths is perfect.
