how big of a quilt out of 11 charm packs?

I found 11 charm pack and one yard of one of the fabrics at a sale..I was wondering how big of a quilt I could make out of this many charm packs and the one yard of fabric.. I have never worked with an precuts before so I am in the dark on the size it would make. The charm packs are from Moda and they are called La Petite Ecole by french general.

charm packs are not all made equal it would depend on how many squares are in each pack

they should be 5 inch squares. I am doing a quilt that will be lap size and it calls for 96 lights and 96 dark. Just google charm square quilts and you'll find lots of different sizes. I make up my own charms packs and when I have a bunch of scraps I just make up a quilt with them!

The first thing I would check out would be Falling Charms youtube video tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt co.

Using all the squares(42 per pack), you could make a quilt top 21 squares wide by 22 squares long (94" x 98" approx.) You would need close to 3/4 yd of fabric for the binding to match. Hope this helps. :) Ann

oh my... Thank you everyone, it said on the package 42 charms 100 % cotton... I will look into the Missouri Star Quilt company for falling charms and see what it looks like...I never thought to google charm pack quilts but will... Thanks so much, I look forward to making something out of these charms, I payed 25.00 for the 11 packs and one yard of fabric and really didn't know when I bought them if it was a good deal but now that I looked up on how much one charm pack cost I guess it was, can't wait to start on a quilt... Thanks again all...

Wow! You gals amaze me. Ann, you were right on it and figured all of that so fast. I sure appreciate how all of you are so willing to help.

Hmm, just thinking: Is the one yard going to be enough for the falling charms?

Yes--you got a good deal. Charm packs often run $10+/pack! Falling Charms is pretty, but it won't use nearly that many charms, and I'm not sure that one yard would make all the sashing pieces. Googling charm pack quilts is a good idea.

There are also a few books using charm squares called "Nickel Quilts" check those out too, they have some great patterns for 5" squares

Here is an idea about "how big" you could make it. If you use the charm packs their entire size minus 1/4" seams, your finished block will be 4 1/2" each (5" square minus 1/2" for 1/4" seams on either side). If you just alternated the blocks in a pattern that pleased you, you could make a top 20 blocks wide and 23 blocks long, for example (42 x 11 packs = 462 charms; 23 charms long x 20 charms wide = 460 charms). That would be an 90" x 103" top prior to sashing; this would be a full/queen size bed quilt.

The Falling Charms pattern using charms and 2 1/2" strips (your one yard of coordinating fabric will not be enough for all of the strips required by this pattern trying to get the largest size top out of your charms) makes a block that finishes 6 1/2" square (5" square plus 2 1/2" strip minus 1/2" for the internal block seam and 1/2" for seaming blocks together). With the addition of a separate fabric for the strips you could make a ~110" x 110" king size bed quilt top 17 blocks wide and 17 blocks long (17 x 6 1/2" = ~110"). You would have 3+ charm packs left over following this plan.

Of course, if you choose a pattern that cuts and reconstructs the charms so that each ends up "contributing" less than 4 1/2" square each to your top, sizes would be proportionately reduced.
