For my actual birthday present (on top of the movie Rango and taking me out for dinner at a hibachi grill/sushi bar) my boyfriend took me to a quilt shop to buy fabric. Didn’t have any luck finding the Moda marbles I wanted for my big project unfortunately, but we had fun and the ladies there loved him for taking me there for my birthday. If you’re ever in La Crosse, WI check out Olive Juice Quilts. The ladies were incredibly plesant and the place is just darling.

Anyways, Joe had spotted this gorgeous dark green mottled fabric with gold specks from the Stonehenge line. He really liked it so I had the thought to buy it and if things work out with him I’d make a quilt for him somewhere down the line. He had to sit down for a bit because a few weeks ago he injured his back and can’t stand for long periods of time. So I set the couple bolts I had down on the table he was sitting at…and the wheels in my head started going and it suddenly just hit me that this green fabric would be the perfect fabric for this Packer colored quilt I was going to make for my childhood friend’s dad (who lost his battle with throat cancer about a month and a half ago). So I brought more bolts to the table and he helped me pick out the other three colors I needed: another 2 Stonehenge and a pale yellow Prisma Dye (there wasn’t a bright yellow Stonehenge). Yes, I said he helped me pick out fabric. Lol.

I didn’t know how much I needed so I just got half a yard of each. That’s where I need help. I need helping figuring out what’s the biggest quilt top I can make with just half a yard of each color. I know I will end up killing plenty of brain cells as well as a tree (with all the paper I’d use) if I try doing the math myself.

Hmmm, depends on what size blocks were you thinking of making. I use Illustrator to draw up my blocks and when I get to this point, I start thinking I really need to pop for EQ7 because it will figure out the yardage for you. My BD is next week. I think that's what I'm going to get.
BTW, this guy sounds like a keeper ;-)

I going to graph this out on paper for you. It'll be a challenge for me. In the mean time if someone else works it out for you in EQ6-7 just go with it. If not I'll have some directions and a size for you. Assuming here that you have 3 half yard pieces of fabric.

with (3) 1/2-yds of fabric you want to make a quilt? for a queen size quilt i use (on average) between 9 & 11 yards of fabric...depending on the design of course.

I can't help you with the yardage, but the picture and design is absolutely awesome. It sounds like you may have a keeper in this guy. I hope everything works out for the best.

I'm inclined to agree here........if you lay out all three pieces side by side, how much space will that cover? Not even the top of a card table, right?

Now fold one piece in half. That is what you'll use in the seam allowances alone. Not to mention what you'll lose/waste in ends and scraps that are unuseable sizes.

A total of 1.5 yards of fabric will make a *small* wall hanging. Maybe.

But the block idea looks great!

I'm working on 5.5 inch blocks (unfinished). I have the templates for row 1 column one done and pieced a prototype. Can you say tiny? I'm thinking you may get to a napkin size quilt with this amount of fabric. There is a lot of waste with all the angles. This is going to be an all templates quilt...shall I go on?

Don't get discouraged! I think your quilt will be stunning. I love your blocks and love the whole Packer scheme. Maybe you can buy more fabric online. You have the numbers on the selvedge, so you will know exactly what you are getting.

CK, I spent two days working on templates for this pattern. I only got through the large green block with the gold background. On graph paper it turned out fine. When cutting templates and stacking them together with seam allowances over lapping it worked out fine but in the end when sewing them together the angles were slightly off. I was using a finished block size of 5" so that you might get several blocks out of the amount of fabric you have even though the finished quilt would be miniature in size. I think it would be more feasible to do 10" blocks but you would probably end up with only three blocks. Like I said before there is a lot of waste fabric with this pattern. Having said all of that, I do think the pattern is worth working with but I would certainly do it in a larger block size and it would be best to have someone with EQ7 work out the templates. I experimented with 1/8" seams and 1/4" seams and once sewn they just didn't quite measure up correctly. It may have been my math though. Good luck!
