We're from a non-quilting culture, my family is German... :-) No one my sister knows has quilts. So this very practical thing makes me wonder.
I want to make a quilt for my nephew - my first one for someone else! My sister, his mom loves the idea. For his bed, for snuggling up in, for building chair tents with... I'll be using wildlife animal prints (not baby prints), so if it's big enough and he loves it enough, and assuming it survives all the snuggling, dragging, building and demolishing of tents, caves, sailing ships and space rockets... he might have it for a long time. Then again, if I make it adult size (sort of just big enough for a a teenager to snuggle down under on a sofa), mightn't it be a bit too big for him to want to lug around at present? Even with thin batting? Any suggestions for a good size that allows him to grow into it while being manageable for him now? |
I'd do a lap size quilt myself. Not to big and not to small.
Good luck. Would love to see it when you get it done. Have fun. |

I assume he is in a twin bed so after making my grandson's lap size I decided twin was a better way to go. Still drag-able, build-able,
hug-able but big enough for their bed. |
I would make it as big as possible. He will grow very fast soon and you want to make something he can use for years to come.

I would do twin size. Big enough to haul around and make tents with, and it will last him awhile, both my kids have twin size quilts for their beds but they usually end up getting dragged everywhere...sleepovers, up north and wherever they happen to plop. They love their quilts!!

Crib 50 x 53" Twin 75" x 98" Double 83 x 106" Queen 90 x 106" King 107 x 108"
Since a twin matress is 39" X 75" I would make a crib size a bit longer like 50" X 75" so it could go between crib and Twin and still not be too big to "love" |

I'd go with what Kwhite said...in between crib and twin. You could do a twin and be sure it's ok, but then again...twin is kinda too big to drag around if you want it to be used that way.
I have a 4 year old girl, and she's a wee bit taller than average but not by much. She's too big for a 45" square quilt. The width is ok, but no way to pull it up to her neck without her piddies showing. You could probably go 50" x 75 " and get a lot of use out of it! |

Make it about a foot taller than he is. He can snuggle with that for good while. When he is a really big boy, you could make another.

The ones I'm making for friends and family kiddos are approximately the same size as crib batting...45 x 60 or thereabouts...uses only one width of fabric for backing and is great for snuggling on the couch, in the car or for a sleepover. Might be too small for the tent making though...hadn't thought of that.

Cool, thank you so much everyone, for all the measurements and your experiences with quilts for small people... this gives me a good basis to chat with my sis about what size to make! :-D :-D This board is just wonderful.
Definitely I'll be posting pictures once there's something to see. :-) |

My DGD has twin size quilts and she takes them everywhere with no problems. It seems to be a good size for her anyway.
