How to border vintage map?

I have this really cool vintage style map on fabric that I want to make a quilt of instead of just leaving pinned to the wall as it is now... but I have NO clue what to border it in! Brights or pastels, or map-y fabric or what! I'm personally partial to batiks and have quite a stash of them... but don't have a clue what to do. Ideas? HELP!

I wouldnt do mapy ot would detract from your cool map I would go with a batik that is in the map color wise the greens or tans or something smaller I can't see to make it pop.

If you have a stash, I would start auditioning fabric. Maybe something in a green or peach?? If you ever have had a painting framed with matting, approach it like you would selecting the colors of the mat. Take photos and then you can see if there is one combination that you like the best.

I have a USA map (on fabric) that I am having the same problem. It will be interesting to see the suggestions for this map fabric. That's a fantastic fabric!

I have no idea what that pattern is - my mom was making it before she passed away, my aunt bordered it and gifted it to me the following Christmas.

I would try to match the ocean color or the pink for USA

I would stay in the same value of the map. Think painting!

Some really old maps had sea monsters in the margins.....

I might try a medium tone batik narrow border to stop the eye, then a lace batik wider border (not really wide - just something to frame it: something like https://www.fabric.com/quilting-fabr...tiks-lace.aspx) then bind in the same medium batik - pull the color from the map.
