How can I use these blocks?
4 Attachment(s)
I received about 60 blocks. They are all like the ones shown below. I don't know what the former owner had planned for them. What pattern could I use? I was also given more of the black fabric and also white fabric that has been cut into strips a little over 1.5" wide.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you. |
To me it looks like it was meant to be the "brick pattern."
|
Some sort of Shadow box quilt?? I have seen the instead of a square a rectangle. I think that MSQC has a pattern called Illusion???
|
I was thinking the Illusion also.

Same here or start of an attic window.

Are they about 4"x8" (including the black sashing?) If so, I would divide the amount into quarters and sew them together in groups of 15 to a row--sewing the black sashing to coloured body of the next block. Then cut 1.5" strips from the black and sew to one side of the first strip. Now sew the next strip to the sashing BUT turn the strip up side down--if you started the first row with the black at the top, start this row with the coloured at the top. Continue like this until you have put together all the blocks. If my initial size estimate was right, you would then have a throw that was approx 60"x43" before borders. It would look similar to Elise1's Passport quilt in this post except that it would
have the blocks going sideways. oops just read what had been posted while I was posting and I agree with the two previous posters. The white strips would make a person lean towards the Illusions pattern. |
You could simply sew them into strips, add 3 or 4 inch sashing between each strip and it would make an interesting pieced backing without too much effort.
|
Here's a simple idea - Put 2 of them together to make a square, trimming if necessary. Then lay them out however you like. I would probably alternate them.
|
They would make a lovely Shadow Box top!
|
I agree with Tartan. You are lucky to have received them.
|
A true shadow box quilt will not have the "shadow" fabric going the full length and width of the focus fabric. The shadow fabric needs to have a square of background fabric sewn on the end to give the 3d effect. I can't tell by the photos but if you sew the black strips you have to the opposite side of each block will they be squares or still rectangles. If they become squares, then I suspect the pattern the original piecer had in mind was this one that barnbum made a while back:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...d-t135766.html She said she got the original pattern out of Quilt Magazine back in 2011 |
I'm working on my second Illusion quilt. The Illusion has a white square on the bottom of the black. Then a black strip with a white square would be sewn across the top. The blocks are then put together with white sashing. This gives the illusion.

A agree with Tartan and Twinkie, a beautiful Shadow Box.

I made an Illusion quilt and these definitely resemble some of the parts.

I like all of these ideas, just love the materials. Good Luck with your choice.
|
OOOOOOOOOO oooooooo I would cut the blocks in half, rotate one and stitch it back together,
|
My initial thought was the same as Feline Fanatic. It looks like a brick pattern.
|
I agree with the shadow box idea
|
Very nice gift. I love the fabrics. Very pretty
|
The fabrics are pretty. If I could not think of anything to do with them as they are - I would unsew the black strips while watching TV and do something else with the pieces.
|
I am surprised that there are so many replies. Just checked back and you have given so many ideas. Thanks for the links too. The colored pieces are rectangles, 5"X 10" without the black sash piece. I think they are what is called charm squares, cut in half. I was thinking Illusion but the black strip goes the length of the colored rectangle with no white square to create the illusion. I don't know if I want to unsew all those black strips. I will mull over all the ideas given and see what I can come up with.
Big THANK YOU to everyone that took the time to respond. |
The fabric is lovely, it looks earthy to me. You can always make a scrap quilt but I also agree with Tartan, it truly would make a great Shadow Box top. Let us know what you decide to do with it.

What if you sewed four of them together with the black strips toward the center so that the black pieces form a kind of (almost plus-shaped) pinwheel? Then trimmed it square. As rectangular as those are, I'm wondering, do they turn into 2 squares if you cut them in half? If so, you may want to cut them in half and get twice as many "pinwheel" blocks. I love the colors of the fabric and really like the black with them. I see a beautiful quilt in the making. Please let us know what you end up doing with them.

The strip on the side looks like it's cut at 2". I'd trim the length to 8 1/2", then add another 2 X 8 1/2 strip on the opposite side. Leave the other sides as they are. Now you have a 8 1/2" square block. Lay them out by turning each block as you build your rows and columns. It makes a lovely woven pattern that looks harder than it is. I took a picture with my camera and sent it to my email, but it hasn't shown up. It looks somewhat like Barnbum's Brick Trails.

Okay, the pic showed up in email, blurry, but clear enough that you can get the idea. Now let's see if I can get it here. The quilt is attached to a machine being FMQed so this is only a corner.
That's weird - very small and not where I wanted it, but you can see the pattern of the quilt. First time using the phone to send a picture. I'll figure it out later. Edit: Now it's huge. |
