I make quilts as a hobby. If I make my hobby into a business, then my hobby becomes work. However, I don't mind getting paid for my time occasionally if someone that I don't know well really wants to pay for one, and I feel that I could do it. I've only sold a few--and bartered one for a custom made surf board! I charged by the block for t-shirt quilts.

I would be uncomfortable charging by time, because I'm so slow. But I don't have plans to make quilts for sale. I think I might, at some point, try selling tops that I'm less interested in putting the time into quilting, but I haven't given thought to how I'd arrive at a price.

I use the same formula as some remodelers use. Add the cost of materials, double that. Adjust this up or down as you see fit. Seems to work well. I also try to buy all materials on sale and I do want something for my time. This seems to keep the cost of the quilt reasonable.
