Hi, I have a problem with sewing together my half square triangles. Such a pattern such as "Dandy Quilt Block"

My squares are not square and my triangles are even worse. Does anyone have a soloution to my delema. Thanx in advance.

I saw something the other day, a new way to do HST. Take 2 squares of fabric, place right sides together and sew 1/4 in.seam around all four sides of squares. Then cut on diagional twice. basically cut an X in the square. Open up the pieces and you have 4 perfect HST. I tried it and it works great, now I just need to figure out what size squares you need for different size HST. Can anyone out there help? I am so not a math person.

Your biggest problem here is that you now have BIAS edges on all your squares! Are you sure you want to do that?

I use this method and love it!

You can adjust the size of your strips - use 2 solids - use 3 different colors - so many options and my triangles and points come out perfect.

am working with HSTS now. have no problem as long as i starch fairly heavily. can't do them if i don't use starch.

Sewing HST's from squares along the diagonal I mark the diagonal and stitching lines with "Quick Quarter" (from quiltersrule.com if LQS doesn't have it). Instructions say to add 7/8" to the finished size of your squares for this method. If you are having trouble, try adding 1" so you have some to trim.
Being way off may be a pressing problem, too. Be careful not to stretch as you press!

The first thing I would do is to starch my fabric stiff. Instead of cutting 4 7/8" for the square, I would cut 5", then square it up. Definitely, press not iron.

Yes you have to square it up..look in the tutorials here on the board..lots of good info in there..Rhonda has a good one for HST's in there...

First, starch your fabric. It really really does help. For years and years and years I didn't, now I'm sooooo glad I am and it has made my life sooo much easier.

As far as, HST's here a free site that makes making them easy peasy.
