I'm still trying.

The hardest things for me to learn are precise cutting and seaming, but I am so much better at it than I was because of what I learned on Craftsy's Cut to It by Debbie Caffrey. By closely watching her as she placed her ruler on the fabric and lined up the marks and number. Where your ruler lines are in relation to your cut makes a big difference in the size of your block or strip. After I learned to cut consistently, I could start practicing making the straight and consistent seams.After these two skills were accomplished the rest is falling in place as I continue to challenge myself with more difficult blocks. (I hope the font size of the post corrects itself when I post.)

Whatever you want to do or need to do better you can usually find instructions on line. This is how I've learned all I know about quilting. I love youtube.

Someone else already said that perfection is over rated. This is true. While I want to make beautiful things, stuff happens. My most recent project was almost finished and I ruined one of the corners on the binding by trying to make it fold too perfectly. Sometimes it just best to remember that its fabric and being exact isn't always possible. Since I sign my quilts I ended up putting two very small appliques on that corner. The year on one side and my initials on the other. Its creative fixing. We all have to do it sometimes. And always remember that there is a liability that comes with taking stitches out too many times to try to fix something. My rule is twice and no more. I'd rather have an imperfect point than a hole torn in it.

...By doing more of it. Practice really does make perfect.

I agree! I watched videos and read instructions online, but there's nothing like having an expert there to help you get better. A lady in our neighborhood who is an expert has taken on several "newbies" and is teaching classes for us starting with the basics. It's wonderful to have a person to answer questions.

I agree with others...I have been quilting for only 5 years and have learned so much watching videos on techniques of quilting and the assistance I received on this board. I also bought a 1/4" foot for my machine....the best thing I ever did! I tried using those "sticky" pieces you put on the 1/4" mark on the plate....however I was always wandering off the mark and I did not always end up with a square block because it was not an exact 1/4". Now I have a perfect 1/4" seam every time, made a world of difference.
