A dear friend taught me 17 years ago - I was pregnant with my youngest child. Our husbands were all deployed on a navy submarine and she held classes at her home (for free) during that 6 months for any wives interested. In that time she taught us the basics along with hand quilting.
Since then over the years I've taken a few classes here and there - I'm always game for that!

When I homeschooled my daughters I was always looking for people who could help me teach them various things. I found a lovely lady who was willing to teach my girls how to quilt. While helping them, I was the one who became hooked!

I made two quilts ten years ago. The first was a memory quilt for my parents' 50th anniversary so I was forced to learn quickly. Then life got in the way.

After my son went back to school this year, I decided to take some classes and learn some techniques. Boy, what I didn't know ten years ago!! I'm on my third quilt this year.

Self taught with the help of some great quilters via TV land..Eleanor Burns, Nancy Zeiman, Fons & Porter. Many thanks to them!
PS... I'm still learning and consider myself a novice!

My son-in-law bought me a junior Kenmore machine to do some mending for him and I saw some cute pink and brown John Deere fabric at Walmart's so decided to make 7 yr old granddaughter a quilt. I sewed a brown border (after buying a book) all around and machine tied it. I think its what is called a one block quilt. As they say, the rest is history. The second was a queen size t-shirt quilt and it took some doing! Don't recommend it for beginners but it threw me into the pool and it was sink or swim. I learned to swim and haven't looked back. I love it.

My paitient and gentle Angelic Mother taught me, at my very young age of 8 years old. She helped me to make a double wedding ring doll quilt. My dad made me some quilting frames from some old laths. I was really doing something great. My mother bragged on me to all of her friends. Later on, when I was much older, we had a good laugh about that quilt. A strong wind could have blown the quilt to pieces. My mother's gentleness and patience engrained the love of quilting in my soul. Did I mention, I am the last of 12 children?

My first "real"quilt was a WalMart Quilt of the month pattern for Trip around the world. It took me forever to complete it, but I have been hooked every since.

I'm a self-taught quilter. No one in my family or within my circle of friends quilts, so I was on my own! :D I just read lots of quilting books and magazines along the way. I didn't find it hard to learn this way, in fact, it suited me to work things out on my own. :D

I taught myself. I bought the Elenor Burns Log Cabin book and took off from there. It was 1978. Now I teach sewing and quilting and love doing that. I try to run a very relaxed class, so people enjoy it and want to continue. I love teaching new techniques.

All on my own.... started with a BOM quilt kit from JoAnns ("Pathway to the Stars"). All hand pieced.... still waiting to be hand quilted. That was 6 years ago. So thankful to have found this board!!
