How to display a quilt???
 

Any advice on building quilt stands or wall hangers? I want to add them to my websites selection of items that I can build but dont know where to start.

How do you display your quilts? How long should the racks be?

I really don't think there are any standards!
In my case, often determined by the space available.

Would love to see pictures of the different styles of floor racks and wall hangers that others have!

i don't have any yet but hubby put it on his never ending list... at my quilt store they have some displayed on a stand. it's about 5 ft tall total, it's a 2X4 on a 2X12X12 block(bottom) at the top some are open circles and some are open hearts, about 1/4-1/3 of a coener is pulled thru the opening and the rest is spread out a bit with just a little puddled on the floor.
i goggled quilt stands (looking for directions) and saw some for sale.

What part of the Texas Coast ? We love it there...the entire coast of Texas. We just spent a week in Rockport and would love to relocate there one day before we die....We try to have a coastal fix at least twice a year...have stayed from High Island, Crystal Beach, Galveston, Palacious, Fulton/Rockport to Corpus.

My DH is a woodworker, so all I have to do is mention something...find a pic or sketch one out and it's done. He has made a few quilt racks and display stands but at this point I only have one. I saw it in a Cracker Barrel a few years ago. It's an open heart on a stand and is about 4' tall. He made about 6 of them and sold them all except the one I confiscated and said "no this is mine"! This is usually what happens with everything. HA!

For hanging, I make a 4" sleeve and bring it to within 2 inches of each end. I use a curtain rod, usually a dark one with some kind of decorative finial on the end. Two nails or screws on the wall and I hang it up.

i put one small nail in the middle of my display area...then i clip a tiny hole in the middle of the 'display sleeve' that is permanently applied to most of my 'personal' quilts (those that are not gifts)...then i slip the hole over the nail head...inside the sleeve is a piece of lath 4 inches shorter than the quilt so that the ends don't show...inexpensive, invisible, and easy to do...I have several pcs of lath painted (to prevent splinters) and stored in a closet for different display quilts (i tend to change seasonally). as long as the hole is exactly centered, the quilt is easy to level out...

I like this idea. I have been trying to come up with a system for hanging quilts, but could never get it formulated in my mind. I think this is something basic that I was trying to come up with. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well, personally, I'm convinced that every shelf should have a quilt hanger under it ;) I mean after all, you get them up on the wall and then what do you do with the space below it? It just looks lonely on a big old wall. I have a shelf I bought on the Nebraska Junk Jaunt this summer. It's a bout 3.5 feet long, has regular wood brackets but they are cut into a hook shape on bottom end of them. What makes it really desirable for a country style decorator like myself is that the closet type pole that hangs on the hooks then has a small hole drilled in each end and a short piece of dowel is then set through the small hole. It's made so the dowel won't slip out of the brackets. I'd love to find a longer one just like it. I also display quilts on an old apple ladder. It was once extremely tall but my ex cut it off and cut it too short. I would like to find one that is nearly as tall as my 12' ceilings so I could hang more than two quilts on it. The apple ladder style is great because the rungs are graduated in length so that smaller quilts that can be hung on a narrow rung at the top and you can progress downward with larger and larger quilts. That way more of each quilt is visible.

While you're making things, ha!, how about some shelves that are similar to the old country style shelves (no heart shaped cut outs please!) with pegs? In the top of the shelf there is usually one plate groove cut in them. I would like to have one that is deeper, maybe 6-7 inches deep that has multiple 1/4" grooves. I would use it to place my quilt rulers in the slots. I have an original one that I am using for that purpose but it just has one groove toward the front, all the rest of my rulers are just stacked behind the first two on the flat of the shelf. These shelves need to be at least 24" long. Leave the pegs as the originals had as they are nice to hang other sewing notions from. I would also like to have a thread rack for very large cone thread. Long and narrow at a reasonable price so I could add more as needed when my thread collection grows. I would like it to be made as the June Tailor racks are made but just in a larger scale with long dowels for the cones to fit and stay well on. My little camera is MIA but if and when I find it, I'll take some pics and try to find this thread again. Harry? Aren't you glad I'm not your wife?? LOL

I have a wall rack with a shelf on top that I have 1 quilt on, and a floor rack that I have 3 quilts on. Tha wall rack is about 4ft. long and is behind my sofa on the wall. The floor rack is about 3 ft. wide and 3 1/2 ft. tall with 3 wood bars for quilts. I hope this helps.
