This is the first time I've done more than introduce myself. You are all so helpfull so maybe someone has seen this and can tell me where it is. Somewhere I saw instructions on adding sashing to a block then trimming it at an angle to make the block set on point. I have searched for a couple hours and can't seem to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

You can turn any block on point without changing the sashing. Your rows will run diagonal, rather than the conventional straight across.

At the edges, you'll need filler blocks, that will be triangles ... and those can either be one piece of fabric, or 1/2 a block. Sometimes people will assemble it all, and then chop off the extra to square up the side.

Put a border around the block just as you would a border on a quilt. Then turn the block so it is "on point", or corners up and down as it faces you. To complete the quilt you will need setting triangles to fit in around the edge of the quilt.

The one I saw made it so it was still a straight set but the blocks looked on point. there were no setting triangles needed. Maybe the wording I need is border not sashing (on each block0

Hmm, I think we are going to need a picture, or a link to a picture. Not sure exactly what you are asking, but it sure sounds interesting, and I'd like to see it!!!!

Is it blocks or squares of fabric that you want to put on point?

Are you trying to do a square-in-a-square block?
Because if it is, not all pieced blocks will work as the orientation might be off.
Unless you put it on point again (3rd pic). ;-)

Please check out the "Twist and Turn Setting Technique". I have it in a Rodale book, but have seen it in other places on the internet.

It's really hard to know ... a pattern like my avatar is all squares made via the tube quilting method. The squares then create the on point look, yet they are not!! The pattern you are looking for, maybe something like that too.

I wish I could remember where I saw it. You take your blocks of whatever size add a border on all 4 sides. You then trim the border on an angle so the border is now triangles. then when you turn your square the inner block is on point and you sew the border edges together as a straight set. I don't have a picture. Thought I had it bookmarked but can't find it.

Then why don't you try it ... and make your own!
