I have also ironed an old towel. Never thought of a Magic Eraser, I'll have to keep that in mind for the next, Oops!

Softener sheets work great. This may seam silly but I also wax the sole plate every so often and it really helps to keep the gunk from sticking. Have the iron hot enough to melt a candle when touched and just rub it around on the sole plate and use some paper towels to catch drips and dry the plate after waxed.
