HELP ! Last time a friend moved someone stuffed a not quite finished quilt top in the same box as some candles and it was really really hot. Yep, the candles melted all over the quilt top. She has managed to get out most of the was using various methods and most of the discoloration is gone, but you can feel there is still wax down in the fibers of the fabric and the fabric is stiff. Anybody have an experience with something like this? Is the quilt top ruined ? Or can it be saved ?

Use an iron and a Terry cloth. Place the cloth on the waxy part and the hot iron on the cloth and the wax will melt on to the cloth. It may have to be done several times, make sure to use a fresh spot on the cloth so as to not transfer the wax back to the quilt. Hope this helps.

Paper towels work with an iron, too. Good luck. The coloring, if any, may not come out with the wax, though.

Also...

When artists do batik, they actually BOIL the fabric and the wax melts off, and rises to the top of the water. The pot cools, and the wax can be removed in a sheet. SO....if it's a whole, whole lot of wax and you are desperate...you can try this. But I guess you gotta weigh the cost-benefit of doing this. If it's a queen size top, you'd need a really big pot. And if it's not 100% cotton, I'd not try it.

Paper towel and hot iron works great. I have done this several times when I've spilled a candle.

An iron and wax paper works too. A friend spilled wax on a sweatshirt. I told him to use iron and wax paper,he said it worked great and left no residual marking.

That is really a shame. I hope you get it out.

When a student in school we did this on purpose to make batik art "blocks". We ironed them with newspaper. Blank newspaper so you don't transfer the newspaper ink to the quilt. also, I thought the boiling idea was a good one unless it's not 100% cotton. However, if you do this, it will probably shrink.

Paper towels work great - the wax transfers to the paper towel and then you just toss it.
