In general the batiks have a tighter weave due to the type of dye process. You will have a very difficult time telling right/wrong side. There is often a 'watercolor', blended,light-dark look to the ones that are only one color (this can be true of printed blender fabrics too, so check the back side). There is also often a very slightly stretchy feel, again due to the way they are made. Wonderful, beautiful fabrics!

IT DOES MATTER, especially if you are buying or selling. the price of Batiks reflects all details that have gone into making it, which differs from regular cottons.

you really DO need to know the difference so you don't get ripped off!!!

another thought: if you are making a quilt top with batiks,
b/c they generally cost more, it will be worth quite a bit more than one made out of strictly cottons
this will explain the exorbitant prices of some finished works...

Not all batiks are tightly woven, and do not fray. Some are looser and soft more like regular cottons.

Batiks are made with a wax to create the pattern. A good explanation is on wiki

I was assuming the waxing method and dyeing was understood....ADDITIONALLY batiks that I have purchased have ALWAYS not frayed/fringed on the edges like my "regular" quilting cottons. I guess my source(s) are consistent.

You're right.
You can't really tell which is right side or wrong side.

there is usually no repeat to the pattern in batiks. Some of the newer patterns have a stamped pattern tho.

I second that! It does matter a great deal! I love working with batiks. I've only just discovered this joy.

I want to say thanks to all who replied to this post. You confirmed some of my limited knowledge, and added a couple more pieces of info, that I did not know. So, I feel very confident that the 5 yard piece that I got for $5 at the thrift store, is actually a batik. How lucky is that? It is going into the drawer with the rest of my batiks, which I will continue to expand on. I just loved working with them.

Thanks again.

This is the most obvious answer.
