In general the batiks have a tighter weave due to the type of dye process. You will have a very difficult time telling right/wrong side. There is often a 'watercolor', blended,light-dark look to the ones that are only one color (this can be true of printed blender fabrics too, so check the back side). There is also often a very slightly stretchy feel, again due to the way they are made. Wonderful, beautiful fabrics!

you really DO need to know the difference so you don't get ripped off!!! |
another thought: if you are making a quilt top with batiks,
b/c they generally cost more, it will be worth quite a bit more than one made out of strictly cottons this will explain the exorbitant prices of some finished works... |

Batiks are made with a wax to create the pattern. A good explanation is on wiki |

You can't really tell which is right side or wrong side. |
there is usually no repeat to the pattern in batiks. Some of the newer patterns have a stamped pattern tho.

I want to say thanks to all who replied to this post. You confirmed some of my limited knowledge, and added a couple more pieces of info, that I did not know. So, I feel very confident that the 5 yard piece that I got for $5 at the thrift store, is actually a batik. How lucky is that? It is going into the drawer with the rest of my batiks, which I will continue to expand on. I just loved working with them.
Thanks again. |
