Some people collect stamps, some coins,some of us collect fabric. I have been "collecting" for many , many years. Recently I have realized I will never use it all, so I need to sell it to others to use. I still enjoy looking at it, toucking it, rearranging it, planning for it And if I didn't spend so much time on the board, I might (maybe) ger more of it sewn up. LOL

There are also some people on the board that own fabric stores. They sell fabric here at a deeply discounted per yard price because it's the end of the bolt or they're just clearing shelves.

Others, like me look for bargains out there like Craigs list, yard sales etc. If I find Moda or similar fabric for $2-$3 a yard, you bet, I'm gonna buy all of it. I'll pick through it and put the rest up here for exactly what I paid for it. Yes, I have sold fabrics for $2 a yard here.

I just got four bags of 2 to 2 1/2 yd. pieces (almost all Moda) from a lady who posted on Craigslist. Apparently a LQS somewhere here in Texas, walked out on her business - she left everything, fabric, tables, everything including a washer & dryer and even some personal items. The owner of the building asked her daughter to clean it out and get it ready to release. I only found her after she'd been already selling for a month so she didn't have much left, but my DH said "If you want to tell the rest of this, I'm your guy" She couldn't come up with a price. He offered her $300. She said oh I don't know, I'd have to add all this up - so I better not... Still it was priced $3 for the pieces that were 2 -2 1/2 yds. Problem is - there's a lot of good guy colors in there which I don't usually buy so I might have to keep all of it since I have 2 sons and a DH that are ready for new quilts.

It's just a way for me to be able to afford the nicer LSQ fabrics without paying an arm and a leg for it. I don't do it often, but when I make a good score - we all benefit from it. (usually).

I buy a lot of what I like by the bolt because of the cost being so much cheaper per yard. As I finally get around to using it, I will use what I want and then offer the rest up for sale, usually here, but also other places.

I have had to buy a bolt at the wholesaler and last year it was $1.35 per yard on sale. Now it is much higher but still less than $3. Can only get it by the bolt which is around 15 yards or 5 yard flat folds.

So it is totally possible to get LQS fabric from major manufacturers at these prices and make a profit or end up with big pieces leftover. Or be given lots of fabric from an estate or someone moving.

I love this! Where does the time go when we are on the board? I collect too. My fabric palette is an ever expanding thing. Of course that makes deciding that much more difficult and that much more rewarding. I guess it's just my budget and my scrappy thing that negates the impulse to buy 6 yds at a time. Since I started this passion well over thirty years ago - those little bits add up to a lot. And you all go and tempt me into more!

Don't know anything about why newbies are selling. I do know why I have what would be large quantities of fabric to someone else. When I first started quilting a little over two years ago a quilt shop was going out of business and I got Moda at 75 cents a yard if I finished the bolt. Also, when fabrics started going up I decided that when I found a fabric I liked I would get an equal amount to what a yard of LQS fabric would be, $10 a yard. So, when I found some David Textiles at Walmart for $2 a yard I would get five yards. I have also got some fabrics that would work for a backing and when I do I then need nine yards.

I've never bought or sold on this board. I just love fabric. I used to buy 3 to 9 yards at a time with no plan in mind. Now I am trying to use up all those impulse buys. I have an 85 yo friend that makes what she calls "ugly quilts" for the homeless. I give her all my excess be it scraps or yardage she will use it. She's made over 4000 and didn't start until about 15 years ago.
