How do you buy your batting?

I know as a quilter I have bought my batting many different ways in the store and by the yard when it was on sale but know you can buy it online as well but never have. I would like to know how you buy your batting? If it is cheaper buying batting in the store/online or by the yard if you do a lot of quilting?

DresiArnaz 02-27-2015 03:59 PM

Thanks for posting this. I'm curious too. I've purchased batting both ways but I forget which is cheaper. Probably by the yard if none of it is on sale...

I would love to know a good resource for buying batting. It is so expensive. I did just take part in a Massdrop for batting. It was $44 and I got a queen and twin size package. When I looked up the prices for this - I saved about $20+. I questioned if I got batting with my 40% off would I have been better. Don't know cause Joann's overcharges so much. I never buy there without a coupon or a sale. I just looked, the Massdrop is over but you can request they do it again. Here is the link.

I buy the 40-yard rolls from Joann Fabrics, when they are on sale. Right now, it is 1/2 price, with free shipping. I think that's the cheapest way to buy it, and it is so convenient to have it on hand.

I just bought two 25 yard rolls of batting from a company that was at our last quilt show. At the time, I just couldn't make up my mind whether to try their batting or not, as I have always been happy with Warm and Natural, though I didn't like paying for it, even with a 40% off coupon. Then, as the quit show was closing, the vendor gave each member of the Quilt Show Committee (I was one) a package of batting. I was very pleased with it, so I bought two rolls just 3 weeks ago. Let me go look up the company and what I paid. I thought the pricing was good, and even the $20. shipping didn't shock me...($20. per roll.)

Okay, it is americanquiltbatting.com I paid $90.31 for 25 yards of polyester and $99.99 for 25 yards of 80% cotton/20 polyester batting.

Just in case anyone wants to go check the site out.

I wish I had space for a roll, because it's probably the best way to use it without ending up with a bunch of narrow leftovers. But I have a tiny house and mostly buy Queen size packages of Hobbs 80/20. Occasionally, I will buy it by the yard from Joann's if I am in a hurry or don't want to spend $50 to get free shipping at Connecting Threads.

MadQuilter 02-27-2015 05:04 PM

I bought a bolt with a 50% off coupon. It will last me for a while.

I alway buy Warm & White or Warm & Natural from Joann's when it is on sale for 50% off & free shipping. Sometimes I split with a friend so that cuts the cost in half.

QuiltnNan 02-27-2015 05:36 PM

when i had room to store it, i bought it by the roll.

Marshall dry goods to the rescue! Only if you have space for a roll though. I purchased a 30 yard roll of hobbs 80/20 last summer for the excellent price of $100 + shipping. That is off their retail site. The roll was not nearly as heavy as I thought it would be, either.

For smaller quilts, I buy white or natural fleece at Walmart. They also have a thin fleece that I like to use in baby quilts because it drapes wonderfully and is very lightweight for the little ones to tote around. Now I'm considering buying some patterned (not plain single color) to use as both batting and backing.

I buy my batting on the roll from Heartbeat Quilting, they have great prices and great service. Both times I've ordered late in the afternoon, on a Thursday and the batting was delivered on the following Monday.

I always get mine by the roll. I can't stand to run out and that's the best way for me to make sure that never happens!

AngeliaNR 02-27-2015 08:31 PM

By the roll online from Batt Mart.

NJ Quilter 02-28-2015 05:33 AM

I bought a roll of W&N at JoAnns store w/coupon what seems like forever ago. It seems to last forever. For storage, I stand it on end in the corner of my sewing room behind the door. And I have next to no room in there!

charlottequilts 02-28-2015 07:19 AM

I buy Quilter's Dream from Hancocks of Paducah when they have free shipping. They keep the surcharge for oversized items, but it was only $15 for 8 queen batts, which was excellent. I would not buy a delicate batt like that off the roll in a store, though, because you never know how the people rolling out and cutting have handled it. A full roll would be completely different, of course.

hugs,
Charlotte

My sister and I go in together on a bull box of Warm and Natural. We split so that we get 20 yards each. Sue orders it online and it's delivered to her door.

I've been lucky at some estate sales. Batting still in package for $5 (qn sz). One estate sale the owner used it for Christmas display. It fit a king sz bed. Washed it to see how it would hold up. I paid a whole $1 for it. Not to say I don't buy it in the store (I do). I usually use a coupon and get the warm and natural.

willferg 02-28-2015 08:21 AM

Walmart has surprisingly good prices on batting by the bolt, and you can have it shipped to your door for a small cost or pick up at the store.

I buy by the bolt from JoAnn's too which I thought was free shipping but they charged me $19 shipping to the store. I would kick up a fuss if they did that to me again. That store sure rubs me wrong anymore. I hate the coupon games. I'm always getting caught with expired dates or something just a bit on sale so can't use coupon.

I do love having a bolt though. That way I always have it handy.

Snooze2978 02-28-2015 09:16 AM

I buy my batting by the bolt thru my almost local fabric store. They have given me a discount in the past plus no shipping charges to me. Works for me.

ManiacQuilter2 02-28-2015 09:16 AM

I use to buy the larger roll of Hobbs Batting 80/20 (30 yds) but now I like the smaller 15 yard roll but haven't been able to find it for sale anywhere. My local JAF doesn't seem to carry it anymore in So CA. Buying it the bag is always a problem trying to remove the wrinkles. They roll it up instead of nicely folding like W&N.

I also live in a very small house, so I have to get creative: Meet Mr. Batting!

I keep my roll in a closet, but right now I'm busy cleaning out all the batting pieces and piecing them for use. He'll go in the closet soon--once I take off the outer plastic wrap, he will expand.

I decided that since he was living in my living room, I'd try to make him a part of the family. :) He looks big and bulky, but he's a softie at heart. He gives and gives, even as I take and take.

Interesting that few of the posts mention the QUALITY of the batting, only the price. Rub some swatches of different brands between your fingers. Try warm & natural, Fairfield products, Hobbs & dream cotton. When you figure out which is the softest, smoothest, most drape able batting (my favorite is Dream Cotton), stock up when it's on sale at the LQS. Piece leftovers together for smaller projects. Use leftovers for quilt as you go this way you can save $ w/o sacrificing quality. And tiny scraps are great for dusting, removing nail polish & cleaning the dogs' ears

I use all types of the Hobbs batting. I buy it in the package by size. It's easier for me to store it in individual packages.

AngeliaNR, love your sense of fun!

lakekids 03-02-2015 06:52 AM

I buy by the roll online. The last time I got lucky and got free shipping on a roll of Dream Wool.

Buckeye Rose 03-02-2015 07:20 AM

Buying by the rolll would be great for several reasons, but that limits you to one kind of batting. I make all kinds of quilts, with some needing the flatter and cooler 80/20 type and some needing the warmth or loft of poly. So I buy it by the bag, usually Hobbs from Connecting Threads when it is on sale.

I live in a camper, so room is precious. I quilt a lot and take advantage of sales. Connecting Thread has sales for 30% off & that's when I stock up. Sometimes I even get the free shipping if I need something else! Works well for me!

joyce888 03-03-2015 11:59 AM

I buy 90% off the roll. When I did the 2 queen and 1 king quilts I bought packaged so I wouldn't have to piece them. I'm also a coupon shopper and only buy when it's on sale or I have a 50% off coupon.

Sbaker1497 04-14-2015 04:30 PM

Do you buy your batting roll from the store or online? My store will only sell the roll using a pay by the yard amount?

This is what I do too. I am on my second roll this way. Nice to have it ship right to your door for free as it is a big box

Vitality 04-14-2015 08:57 PM

I buy it by the roll/bolt ... I like to keep cotton batting and hobbs 80/20 on hand. For cotton I like the "Soft and Crafty" type... I've used warm and natural and quilters dream too. I can't see a real difference and the price is good on the Soft and Crafty brand. I also just got a good deal on a smaller bolt of black batting from Joann's online.

ckcowl 04-15-2015 02:09 AM

I buy my batting by the bolt from BattMart. I also pick up individual batts from Connecting Threads when they have sales - like Hobbs wool & black batts.
