How do you know the right side of batting

I was wondering how to tell what is the right side of bats. Which side should be towards the top of the quilt. I never knew there was a right side to batting.

Not all batting has a "right side". If it's needle punched, the side where the holes are sinking into the batting is up. For scrim batts, the scrim goes facing down. W&N is the easiest to tell because the side with the seeds in it goes up. Resin bonded batts like Hobbs don't have a right side.

Make it easy on yourself, use a batting that doesn't have a right or wrong side.

My Warm and Natural has seeds on one side. I do not really pay attention to which way it faces unless the back is very light.

I agree with Peckish.

I go to the site for the company that makes the batting and look it up. If there is a right & wrong side, they will tell you there.

I do the same process as above.

I'm not too concerned with right or wrong sides.

I've been quilting a long time and I just recently discovered that batting has and up and down side! Here's a good article:

Same here... Haven't had to be concerned.

I was never concerned because never had bearding......until.....made a black tote with white warm/natural...usually use black but did not have any that day and did not want to go out and shop. The body of the purse was fine but the large straps...had bearding everywhere ...since I stitch several rows of straight stitching to strengthen my straps...learned a lesson that day....warm and natural will beard depending on how it is used. I now make sure I have wide belting on hand for straps and black warm and natural...also pay a little more attention to right and wrong side...LOL

For those of you who aren't worried - let me tell you that if you use a batting like Warm and Natural and you get it the wrong way - YOU WILL BE WORRIED. The thing that I hate is that Warm & Natural does not put this on their packaging - at least not on the rolls.

W&N has posted on their site under frequently asked questions their answer to this question:

Opps, I goofed cuz I didn't realize there're is a difference. I learned something new.

I don't pay any attention to whether it has a right or wrong side. I save my energy and concerns for something that will show...

newbee3 02-01-2016 05:51 PM

I always say put the smooth side down towards the backing.

Littledreamdevil 02-01-2016 08:46 PM

I found this while searching the internet. I thought this may help everyone who has wondered if batting has a "wrong and right side.

Had no idea there was a right or wrong side with batting.
