How do you label a quilt
 

I have made a lot of baby quilts as gifts and a few others but have never labeled one. I have an embroidery machine that I could use to make a label ( I think) How and what would it say? I just finished 2 for great grands coming and would like to do something.:confused:

You should definitely do something...GREAT grands? Wow. Congratulations!

I've done labels using my embroidery machine but feel like more or less a newbie when it comes to labels. I just buy a ready made border and fill in the middle with words. Some here just use pens, but I know from a quilt I was gifted that after a few washings, those "permanent" markers start to get light--one of the original reasons I was interested in an embroidery machine.

Most of the charity ones I do just a simple one saying the name of our organization and the address--one color.

sometimes I 'personalize' a label for who it's for, or a special occasion- I also always include- the name of the quilt, my name, city, state, fiber content and care instructions- sometimes a date too.

I think only three things are truly necessary in a quilt label - who made it and who is the recipient (if known), where it was made (which further identifies the "who"), and a date. It's nice to add the occasion, care instructions, private message etc. - but the important things IMHO are who, when and where.

no embroidery machine here. I just use a piece of fabric that is fairly solid and that writing can be seen on. Lately I have been inserting it in a corner. The fabric is a folded square, so I have a nice edge to tack town. The raw edges get sewn down along the seam line before I put my binding on. Wish I knew how to blur lettering! That is why I erased the baby's name...one more thing to put on my "I need to learn out to do this on the computer' bucket list!

I am in the middle of a memory quilts project, and for first time I considered labeling. I have made quilts in the past and now I can't remember for sure what year I made them. I have a sewing machine that does letting and so now I treat my quilts just like I would a picture I painted. Date and name... only I don't want my name. I put "TMK 2013" for Teresa Meyer Keepsakes.. then I know for sure what year I made them. I want my name to be understated.... to personalize I don't think my sewing machine can give me what I want. There is someone here on the board who makes beautiful labels sewnsew2. I am very pleased with her labels she made for me and may very well use her again :) I don't know if my attachments worked right, but her labels are beautiful
