How do you prepare your quilt before it goes to the LAQ?
I have never sent out my quilts to be quilted, so this is new to me. I got tired of wrestling with FMQ on my old machine and I've never like the results. I've found a long-armer that is reasonably priced and lives close by, so I'm gonna give it a whirl. Other than her requirements, I'm feeling a little self-conscious about how the quilt top is made. I've enver had anyone look at the back side of my work. I've been busy clipping all of the loose threads, pressing, correcting those off points, etc.
What do you do to prepare your quilt top, batting , backing for professional quilting? Thanks, Cindy |
I clip as many threads off the back as I can. I don't want to find any threads showing through after the quilting. I press my top as well making sure I don't have any flipped seams.

I did this for the first time yesterday. I trimmed any loose threads, pressed, measured, and folded the top. I simply folded the backing. I pinned a card with the measurements of the top and the backing at the head of the quilt top (so she would know which end was the head). She supplies the batting, so I didn't have to worry with that.

I like to receive the quilts as clean, seams intact,squared, and ironed. Backing and batting included, with backing also ironed etc. No smell of cigarette smoke or pet hair! [This is absolute due to my allergies.] Backing should be larger than quilt by about 4" each side. Please don't ask me to piece your back or batting, or if you ask then politely accept my 'No." Personally, I don't do binding though I do know of some who do and then charge extra.
I write everything down that is expected and what is agreed upon. Since I mostly do charity quilts this hasn't been a problem. |
I don't send mine out. I quilt all my quilts myself. I can do them as I please.

I understand clipping the loose threads and pressing, but correcting the off points? Please! The longarmer is not the quilt police. If you want to correct the points, that's your prerogative, but the longarmer won't be surprised or offended by them.

In addition to the other comments I would add to stay stitch around the entire top about 1/8 inch from the edge.

Make sure both top and backing are squared up.

Please clip loose threads, if sending backing make sure it's at least 6 inches bigger (8in better) than your top and squared, also please NO salvage if it's a pieced back, if no borders stay stitch 1/8 inch all around to keep from pulling apart at seams. No deep creases in the top or backing.
These are the things I ask for, and will need to charge extra if I have to do them. It's very nice of you to ask. Your longarmer will appreciate it very much. And a happy quilter is always a good thing. ♡ |
