How do you quilt Appliqued quilts?
 

I have just finished a child's appliqued quilt with 12 1/2" blocks and sashing between them. The applique designs are rather large. I usually FMQ all my pieced quilts on my domestic machine but I am at a loss as to what to do with this one. I was thinking of outlining the applique designs and stippling the rest of the quilt. Since the applique is rather large, should I do something to hold down in the applique or will just outlining be enough. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and answers.

I'll repeat my 'advice'. Your batting is the rule you need to follow. It will tell you the max distance apart your quilting lines should be. A quilt that will be used a lot needs to be quilted a little closer than the max. Remember to measure in all directions including the diagonal.
You can outline the designs, then add a bit of accent quilting in the design. you also need some quilting in the block around the applique as I am not aware of any batting that will support an unquilted area of 12.5".

I would definitely outline the applique designs in each square including some internal aspects, such as the line between the arm and the body, for example. Then, in the background of the applique blocks, maybe a cross hatch or any small background fill. I might do the sashing with a simpler design, maybe crossed x's (clear as mud?)

I always check the directions like Paper Princess stated. In fact, I circle in magic marker for a quick glance. Have even used blue painter's tape on the end of the roll for easy glance at the notation. Hate having to shuffle the bags/rolls around.

I wish you had posted a photo. I do what Tartan suggested. I love the typical crosshatching that was done on applique quilts in the olden days.
