How do you store all your quilt pattern?
 

I have started to quilt again and already have accumulated many patterns. I have them stuffed in a bag for now. I need to find a better system. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Labeled each one with different categories -- e.g., Log Cabin, Christmas, Children's, Applique. They hold quite a few patterns, plus I can include magazines that have a pattern I want to keep (I put a little marker on the pattern page of the magazine; either a small post-it or one of those plastic flags). The labeled magazine holders sit on a bookshelf. It's really easy to pull one out and rifle through the patterns. If I don't have quite enough in there to keep all the patterns upright, I add a little balled-up paper filler.

In the past I tried 3-ring binders, but find they are too bulky for my taste.

I keep mine in a 3 ring binder with all the patterns in those plastic page protectors. They are sorted and tabbed by category.

I store them in a cabinet in my sewing room, on top of said cabinet, on a shelf tucked between fabric stacks, a stack under my sewing table, a large plastic tote in the spare bedroom and a couple sitting on my sewing table! (LOL!!) I do have my digitized ones in files by what kind of pattern they are on my computer (if that counts!) I am in the process of revamping my sewing room now so I'm thinking that I will whittle my collection down and make it more manageable. Probably will store them in a plastic bin, but who knows?

I bought a wall hanging that is metal and has a long metal arm. There are 15 clasps on it and I put my patterns on it. It swings so I can have it flush to the wall or straight out. I love it so much I bought a second one. I don't remember the name but I bought them on Amazon.com within the last year. So, I have 30 patterns that I can just flip thru and pull one down if I want it. I also have a pattern box, but it's a pain. I have to have good lighting and pull each pattern up and look at it.

I have mine in a fabric box but it is getting full, I was thinking about one of those clip things but I think I have too many

You can make your own from large cereal boxes, just cut the box at an angle leaving about 6 inches at the bottom to hold the paperwork in.

This is what I do, too. I have them sorted into Christmas, make "someday", make "very soon", patterns I've already made, etc.

I keep mine in Sterilite tall plasic containers that I get at Joann when the everyday plastic storage is on sale at half price. They hold quite a lot of patterns. I have 8 of them, because I have over 1000 patterns, and they each hold different types of patterns, like piecing, applique, Christmas, etc. The boxes have handles and the lids snap onto the bottom, so they are easy to move around and stack.

You could use the hanging folders used for file cabinets but hang them in the cardboard file boxes (purchased from office supply store). Then you could label the folders (with those plastic tabs that attach to the folders) of patterns by style, size, or craft.

This is my method of choice too. Some of mine just haven't made it into the binder yet.

I use the same system as Auntpiggylpn, except I also have a few in the bathroom, a stack in the bedroom and probably a box or two in the storage building! I will be watching just in the event someone suggests a foolproof system for someone like me that loves magazines and printing quilt patterns off the internet as well as the actual quilt patterns that come in fancy little plastic envelopes.

When we moved in here, there was a large oak kitchen cabinet in the garage. (like the ones in my kitchen) I placed it like a cabinet on the floor in my sewing room.

It has three shelves and I placed (three row on each shelf) labels on the end of the shelves with a label gun. That way the type patterns that go into that place/stack is easy to read. I also sew for men, children and myself occationally.That is why I have so many.

It has been wonderful to get them out of those individual moulded plastic cases and into this where it is so easy to find what I want. Then a bookcase holds the books, folders or binders.

I did purge some of them to the second hand store recently. It is important to do that once in a while so you aren't overwhelmed with the ones you won't use anymore.

I forgot to mention that I have all of the frequently used rulers and sewing cards and cd's stored on top of the cabinet. There is one drawer of plastic templets and speciality rulers in the closet. This system is great and works for me.

I store a lot of my patterns in "under the bed" boxes. You can get a lot under there!

I've only been quilting a couple of years, but I save mostly free pattern off the internet in my computer. When I start working on the pattern, I print the instructions & save those in a 3-ring binder with a zipper. I have a few books, most given to me, one I bought at a flea market. Unfortunately, no place to organize those, but I keep them nearby. I dream of some day having a wonderful sewing room to get organized in.

I have so many now that I bought a plastic crate made for holding file folders. Now they are all devided into files. So easy to find what Im looking for.
A file for stars, whole quilts, blocks, children, instructions, etc.

I use loose leaf binders and paper protectors for patterns I tear out of magazines. For patterns in envelopes I use those small washbaskets and they stand up in them very well. I catagorize them by ( baby, mini, table runner etc.) flipping through them is easy and I know where they are.

I keep mine in one of the extra large lined wicker baskets (Lowes). If you like the magazine holders, Ikea has the Flynt kind for $1.99 for 5. I bought a bunch of the metal ones (Dokument) from there several years ago, in silver, for all my quilting magazines...those are great.
