I store them by the collection this way I know what I have in case I want to make a quilt using only that collection.

I store by collection if it's pre-cuts like jelly rolls, layer cakes, or fat-quarter packs. I store yardage and scraps by color.

Reason being is that if I like a collection, I will start with that as the base palette and then add more fabrics that I like that will go together with it. The collection gives me a good starting base that I can enhance with other things.

There is a crate called Robert Kaufmann filled with his interesting lines from several years ago. Then there is one called batiks. One called prints. One called hand dyed. One called whites and golds. One called Solids and Amish (mostly Kona). And several with every thing else. Then there are bags with projects already sorted out. Those fabrics are off limits. Then there is the crazy quilt bag.
I understand the system.

I store in categories in medium size Rubbermaid totes, you can see thru the sides and they have a white top and stack easily 5 high. Batiks ( I have many) I store by color in totes. The other totes are Christmas, Solids, Denim, Wrap basket supplies, Whites and Creams, Print collections are together, Misc single Prints and leftover scraps from projects I keep in ziplocs in totes.

Thanks. I try to store by color but I find there are some fabric lines I like to keep together. Since I am trying to set up my new sewing room, I was wondering if I was making things harder for myself than I need to.
