How do you store your rulers?
I need a better idea for how to store my rulers so that they stay flat. I've been keeping them under and next to my cutting mat, but of course they're sometimes in the way, and then I end up putting them on the floor under the table. Please share how you stow yours!
I have a large peg board on the wall. I hang the rulers with a hole on that. The smaller ones usually don't have a hole so they go in a drawer in small cabinet under my sewing machine table. I have one of the slotted ruler holders and use it to keep the few rulers I use the most handy.
I also use a pegboard. I don't have any rulers that are so small they don't have a hole, except my add a quarter ruler. I kept the packaging it came in which is like a vinyl pouch that does have a hole. so that hangs as well, in its pouch.
I do the same with my longarm templates. They all hang from a pegboard in my LA room. The only ones that don't have a pre-drilled hole are my HQ circle templates and I also kept the packaging and hang that from the pegboard. Love my pegboards. |
I also use peg board for my regular cutting rulers. I just bought a case for my Bernina ruler foot rulers.
Ditto on the peg board
I have the pegboard but not up yet. Right now they are doing well in a metal mail sorter that's upright. The back is taller and holds my June TAilor Shape cut and my 12" square. They don't take up a lot of space and sit on top of a bureau. I also have my magazines and couple books in another sorter. I downsized on the magazines and catalogues.

Mine are on the back of the door, on small command hooks
My long rulers are hanging just under the cutting table for easy reach, my "go to" rulers are on a slotted stand made for rulers and those I don't use much at all or specialty rulers are hanging on my pegboard behind me and my cutting table. Really large rulers are under the cutting table at one end.

Lyncat's DH made her a really neat ruler corral - http://www.quiltingboard.com/mission...l-t285884.html
The ones I seldom used are stored in a drawer, while the ones that get most use are *supposed* to be stored in one of those wooden things with slots sitting on my cutting table. In reality, they get left all over the place. I'm trying to think of other options, and that ruler corral is really neat. |
my larger ones are in a wooden holder that has slats cut in it. they stand upright. then have a smaller one hanging on the wall plus a peg board one near my sewing machine to hang others. also my cutting table has a small drawer.

This is the best storage option I've found so far. Don't have room for a peg board as I sew in my dining room. It's on wheels so I can move it easily. I'm storing my printed patterns also. I found this rolling file at a thrift store
The thing I like is that I can store my rulers & templates with the instructions. Although hanging folders have been suggested before, this unit allows me to make outsized ones. Here's a wide one, made from poster board and 2 canibalized pendaflex metal hanging parts. Rulers stored in these long ones need to be removed from the side of the unit. Here's a deep one for my 12.5 X12.5 square up. You can see how I cut the bottom off & extended it. Last week I just realized that if I lower the top rail so the tabs are below the posts, I can get my husband to cut a sheet of plywood and make a top. Just what I need, another flat surface. |
Mine are in a drawer but will make it to peg board when my son comes back and installs it!
I have a ruler rack for my most used long rulers and I stor all my others in a double deep artbin box
Mine hangs on nails. Smaller rulers stand in the closet in ziploc bags
with their instructions. The Add a 1/4 inch and other skinny rulers are in a big tumbler. |
I have a tall bookcase that I keep supplies etc. on. I put small nails on the side. This allows me to see all of my rulers and templates at a glance.
i have no room for peg board. i sew in my dining room, so no where to put rulers either. and i have lots of rulers ..in a corner between hutch & deck doors/windows i have hung command hooks. all my rulers are up and hanging & not too noticeable if i have the rare dinner guests :) my block book with felt & vinyl pages is hanging there also. up out of way of kitties looking for a nice bed when i'm not sewing.

I may try the pegboard as I have that loaded with everything else. I have them kinda scattered. Just cleaned my sewing room today so now is a good time to hang those rulers!
I have an old mail in out holder that is a step up each slot type. It works great and sits near where I cut my blocks. Two long rulers hang by their lip off the side of the bookcase where they all sit. It would be perfect, except I have misplaced my main cutting ruler. I haven't a clue where I have placed it. I have been using the really long one, but I think it is time to break down and buy another.
As far as the mail holder goes, I must have 15 assorted rulers stored in it. These are the ones I use the most. I also have a drawer in my closet with a few specialty rulers and nails in my closet with quilting templets and rulers hanging there. I know where they all are and what I have this way. |
I have a piece of wood with slots in it. It was originally for holding cookbooks open. My rulers slide in that. But it isn't big enough for all my rulers. So a friend gave me something that she got at Bed and Bath. I don't know what it's called but it looks like something you put file folders in. It's sturdy enough to support my bigger rulers.
Ditto on the pegboard here. And when I'm using them and don't want to hang them, but don't want them in the way I stand them on the floor next to my table legs which are somewhat inset so the rulers aren't in the way.
All 4 of mine are laid flat on one end of my cutting table.
My large rulers are hanging on one of my peg boards. For the smaller rulers with holes, I use one of those large rings that you get at the office supply store, I sort them by shape and hang them on the peg board. For the ones without a hole, I store flat in one of those containers that are made to store scrapbook paper.
my larger ones are in a wooden holder that has slats cut in it.
This works well for me too! |
I also have a pegboard on the wall. Mine is 4' x 6' and I've added some hooks from the hardware store. I keep all kinds of things on it - scissors, rotary cutters, rulers, spools of ribbon, you name it.
I sew in my dining room, so the rulers all fit nicely between the china hutch and the wine rack. My cutting mats slide nicely under the hutch.
I don't have room for a pegboard either....so I use the small metal command hooks and hang them on whatever surface that has the space. Mainly on the outsides of the cabinets I have for other storage. And on the insides of some cabinet doors. I have plastic cabinets and no other way to hang anything on the sides of those without the command hooks. The space behind the door is used for hanging embroidery machine hoops also with command hooks. Those little command hooks are great and can hold a couple of rulers. No damage, can remove and re-configure the space as needed.
I store mine in a large open cubby area under my cutting table.
I thought I was so clever when my DH installed screws on the side of one of my sewing room cabinets UNTIL I accidentally missed the screw when hanging my 8 1/2 square and it slid down the cabinet onto the CONCRETE floor. I now have a bum corner on that ruler and am looking for a good sale to pick up a replacement. I'm not much of a fan of hanging now.
I too hang them on a peg board, the small ones, I place in a large freezer bag and also hang on peg board, this works best for me.
Two nails in the closet wall. One for "square/rectangular" rulers and one for "other". Super easy and works beautifully!

I keep mine on a pegboard, too. Bought inexpensive curtain rod rings, and it works well!

I bought one of those circular ones that you just thread thru the hole and hang it on the back of my door.
I store my rulers in several drawers.
I have a pegboard in the closet of my sewing room. It holds my rulers, embroidery hoops and my cutting mat.
My daughter bought me one of these a few years back that I like & use. I store it on my sewing table but sometimes it's in the way so I have to move it. I only have a few rulers so it meets my needs.
