How do you use this thing?
 

I got this free from Westalee when I bought some templates. It's called a spacing gauge but no youtubes available. What is the hole for? Am I being stupid or what?

I am also having a "DUH" moment. Hopefully someone will help us out!!

The hole is for hanging. The 4 points are for measuring seam sizes. I've used one for years.

I am with popover.

i got a similar 'goodie' with an order. it came with a little chain in the hole, like for key chains or a pull chain on the fan

I have a few metal ones like this. Really I have never used one, haven't seen the need.

I think that Westalee includes it as a helper for learning to get the proper spacing at the end of your ruler. When you first start using rulers, it can be difficult to decide where to put the end of your ruler, since it needs to be offset by 1/4" from the point where you want your stitching to go.

I had one in my sewing odds and ends box. Finally used it when I got a new machine, and the 1/4 seam line was oddly placed. I used the little tool to determine the right needle position to get that scant 1/4 in. seam. You can also use a lined index card to verify your seam. The lines are exactly 1/4 in. apart.

Rob is correct. This is a spacing gauge to measure the distance between the ruler template and your ruler foot or between your previously quilted line and the ruler so when doing ruler work you have a guide as to where to place your ruler template and you get nice evenly space lines.

I'ts used to measure the depth of a seam that you've sewn. It's a handy little tool to have, especially if you're like me and tend to 'waver' from the straight of a seam! It's also useful if you're having a difficult time lining up blocks in a quilt. You can check to see if the seams in each block are the correct depth.
