How do your geese fly?

I'm just curious as to which method is your favorite to make flying geese? I have tried four different ways and I'm wondering which one works the best for you.

nygal 03-20-2013 12:00 PM

Below is my favorite way.....I like it because it makes FOUR at once and each one is perfect.

After you make one set it is so easy and you can do it without much effort at all. I bought the rulers on Amazon at a good price.

JenniePenny 03-20-2013 12:03 PM

Crookedly. That is how mine fly.

feline fanatic 03-20-2013 12:11 PM

I do a rectangle with two squares. Cut down and use the scraps as leader and ender HST.

Earleen 03-20-2013 12:16 PM

Mine fly with their wings. Bad I know.

EasyPeezy 03-20-2013 12:46 PM

Since I've been using the "no waste method" my geese have been flying pretty well.
Try different methods until you find one that you like.
Deb Tucker has a nice video on Youtube with similar method but you have to buy
her ruler too.
I just bought the "Fit to be Geese" ruler but haven't used it yet.
Sounds like a nice ruler for squaring FG.

I use Eleanor Burn's geese ruler and my geese come out perfect every time.

loves_2_quilt 03-20-2013 12:54 PM

Me too, and if I have to make them another way I make them oversized and use Eleanor Burn's geese ruler to trim them.

I liked the way Bonnie Hunter did hers, with the Ez angle ruler and the Companion ruler. I already had the Ez angle, and I just got the companion for 3.99 at Joanns on sale.

I use the go baby cutter. One rectangle and two triangles, cut off the extra. If I iron correctly they're good.

mom-6 03-20-2013 02:03 PM

I've only done them a few times. I just did them with the little square, stitch diagonally and cut off excess triangle underneath. Worked fine for me. Saved little triangles for who knows what later.

That is my favorite method...love that there is no waste. It is important to cut accurately and to sew an accurate seam.

QuiltinginSD 03-20-2013 07:40 PM

I do them using the Eleanor Burns method and her geese rulers. Mine turn out beautifully every time. I've tried several other methods & they never came out straight.

giquilt 03-20-2013 07:51 PM

I use the Lazy Girl ruler and love it. No waste and geese are correct size after dog ear trim.

giquilt 03-20-2013 07:52 PM

Saving triangles.

Sometime soon I will post a quilt I made with leftover triangles. It was so fun to make.

sewNso 03-20-2013 08:05 PM

mygal, thx for the link. i have the ruler, but never made them. will now.

sandy l 03-21-2013 03:29 AM

All my geese are PP:)

Rose Marie 03-21-2013 05:51 AM

Eleanor Burns is the only way for me also.

Julie in NM 03-22-2013 04:24 AM

No waste method for me and do have the special ruler to make them any size I want/need.

quiltmom04 03-22-2013 04:27 AM

I have Deb Tucker's ruler and I love it for flying geese. As much as I try, I'm still one of those people who do better making something a smidge bigger and cutting it down, and this ruler and method does that. I guess lots of people can cut and sew triangles, but like I said - I'm not one of those people!!

Nanny's dollface 03-22-2013 05:43 AM

Depends on my time...if time is not an issue then I prefer the traditional method: 1 rectangle and two squares (call me quirky but I love to piece) however if time is an issue then I use Eleanor Burns" method and her rulers to make 4 at a time.

maggiek 03-22-2013 06:02 AM

Ricky Tims has an interesting method you might want to look at too. I don't have the link but I'm sure you can find it easily.

mic-pa 03-22-2013 06:08 AM

I use Easypeesy's way of doing it. Works well for me.

I just learned a new method when I was making the Connecting Threads mystery quilt and I really like it. New to me, anyway. I also make mine a smidge bigger and trim them down.

nana2madmax 03-22-2013 07:17 AM

I use the Quilt in a Day flying geese rulers.....perfect every time!

skjquiltnut 03-22-2013 10:21 AM

katybob thanks for info; want to try asap. Is there any way to show the rest of this page?

jeaninmaine 03-22-2013 10:22 AM

I use the method katybob showed. Easy, I don't need a special ruler and it works every time. someone did a really nice tutorial on making them this way here on the board, I don't know the URL.

Here it is. I cut the C squares 4" instead of 3-7/8" and trimmed them a little.

Me too except I pass the HST leftovers to people who make projects with small HSTs.

CoventryUK 03-22-2013 12:29 PM

Ricky Timms method everytime!! Just one seam.....easy and accurate!!!

gramquilter2 03-22-2013 04:21 PM

I use the no waste method and really like it.

mjhaess 03-23-2013 12:05 PM

I like Elenor Burns method the best...

nightquilter 03-23-2013 07:00 PM

Cat-a-wampus (not sure if that is a word in anyones world but mine) but it means usually crooked. Bad I know. But I do not use a ruler for these.I usually stay away from patterns with them because my seams take points off and I do not like no pionts on my fg.

nightquilter 03-23-2013 07:09 PM

I watched this and the next ruler I will buy is a set of these!!!!!
