My sister inherited a whole stack of hand made Sun Bonnet Sue's from her Grandmother in law several years ago. She just showed them to me recently and I am trying to encourage her to complete a quilt. The Sue's are completed, about 10" tall and just need appliqued on something. I'm a fairly new quilter and my sister has only done one quilt about 35 years ago, but sews other things very well.
My question, how would you finish it? My first thought was different colored blocks and she thought just one solid piece and put them on that. I just saw a thread about muslin and it struck me that would probably be a good thing to put them on.
What suggestions do you have?

I would google "sunbonnet sue", click on "images" and find a setting that appealed to me. There are many ways you could use them, all a matter of personal preference.

How very special to get Sues her grand mother made, it would be nice to just applique them on a nice muslin or plain white. That would certainly be in line w/the era they were made.

I would consider a simple/plain background to show off Grandma's work.

Generally, the Sue's are appliqued to a plain background of muslin or tone one tone fabric. You can get creative, if you decide to add sashing between the blocks, by using a different fabric to go around each block, generally 30's reproduction fabric. I have seen them with a variety of sashing fabrics, but depending on the age of the blocks, this might be something to consider.

I would put them on muslin blocks, pick your favorite color for sashing and borders. Easier to adjust the size of the top this way too.

One of my absolute favorite Sunbonnet Sue variations I've seen is set on point alternating with an Irish chain-type of block. I know someone on this board has one such quilt as her avatar. Hopefully someone will post a picture!
