How to flatten a roll of batting
 

I usually buy my batting in the big huge rolls. Someone gave me a crib quilt sized batting, all rolled up in a tube like package. OMG - when I unrolled it, it's a mess! This is poly batting.

How can I flatten it out so I can use it? Thanks!!

Put it in your dryer with a damp towel for 10-15 minutes. It should smooth out just fine.

Ah, thanks!! I'm assuming I use low heat?

I just use the normal setting. But certainly try on low heat first and see if that does it, if not use normal heat. Many quilts are washed in hot water, so I haven't worried to much about low heat for this part. Since you are using poly batting, low or medium heat is OK.

In fact, I don't prefer the real crinkly look in my quilts, so when I use cotton batting like Warm & Natural, I always wash it in hot water (no soap) and dry it on high heat before I sandwich the quilt with it. Works great.

I use low heat for everything except towels. Less harsh on fabrics of any kind.

Jeanne-I have a question for you---what batting do you usually use because I don't like crinkly quilts either? I tried washing some W&N once and I really had a mess in my dryer. Thank you in advance for any help.

Thanks for the tips. They worked great! I much prefer my huge roll of batting though! Just cut as much as I want and I'm good to go!

I have bought a large roll of wool/poly batting and as I have gotten through the roll I'm finding the inner stuff is very wrinkled/creased. I cut off what I need and give it a steam and light iron on a medium/low heat. I then leave it draped on the floor for a day or two to make sure there is no moisture left in it from the steaming. It reduces the creases substantially. This is a bothersome thing which I never really considered when buying my roll and despite the savings of buying in bulk, I just may not do it again because of this hassle.

I just finished a big roll, but it was 100% poly, not a wool blend. It was as smooth in the middle as the outside. What you are experiencing ruby2shoes sounds like a pain. I think this is the 2nd big roll I finished, both were smooth in the middle. Perhaps it's a characteristic of poly? Or maybe I'm just a lucky soul.

I mostly use high loft poly batting. Am never disappointed. If mine is not flat I use it anyway. By the time it is quilted, washed and dryed, it is smooth.
