 PLEASE help! I need to get two quilts done in a hurry and wanted to try FMQing. I don't have a darning foot and I hear that is what most of you use...but what can I use if I don't have one? And ok, stupid question but do you have to use a foot at all? I'm new but yet not to quilting, I've just never done the free motion before.
Thanks for all your help! :XD:

You can free motion without a foot, but be careful, its easy to sew over your finger like that.

I've done potholders without a foot. It worked just fine. It is possible to get your fingers, so be aware of where they are all the time.

I love to FMQ not using the foot. Gives me more thought on the design rather than regulating the speed with the foot. I just lower the speed a little and push my start button.

Hey thanks Ladies!! I also use the start button, can't deal with the foot pedal, to many dogs around. BUt I tried it wihtout a foot sometime back and thought it was a bit to free but then, slower is the key I guess! Thank you all so much!!

You could use any regular foot to freemotion... you just cant see *where you are going* like you can with an open foot. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT ATTEMPT FREEMOTION WITHOUT A FOOT ON THE MACHINE... unless you look forward to sewing a couple stitches right through fingernails and fingers....

OUCH!! Thanks, that hurt just reading it!! HA!

I thought the purpose of the foot was to keep the fabric down close to the stitching for proper tension and guidance ... and also for safety. Without a foot you would have to use your hands or something to keep the material down and be very careful.

I imagine a open toe foot would work.
