How to go about setting blocks on the diagonal in colums?
 

I want to set my pinwheel sampler blocks on point but in columns like this quilt. http://www.geocities.ws/mariawerth/
Any help with how to figure the size of the triangles around the sashed block is appreciated.

There is a formula for figuring out what size corner blocks you will need. I found this site to be fairly easy to understand: http://quiltville.com/onpointmath.shtml But if you could tell us what the finished size of your blocks will be, I have a couple of books that list corner block sizes compared to on point block sizes.

Thanks GingerK. (BTW love your quote , so true. Gave me a laugh.) I am planning to sash each block so that will make the block size 13 1/2 inches. I have several books that show sewing the setting triangles on the diagonal and then piecing the blocks on the diagonal. I was thinking that a triangle could be sewn on each side of the block and then sew the blocks straight to make the column. Hope this explanation makes sense. Would this not work? I have never done a diagonal setting before.

Yes that makes total sense and that is exactly what you would need to do to achieve the columns like in the link you posted. So your FINISHED block is going to be 13 1/2 inches square. That means for each block, you should cut two squares 10 1/2 " x 10 1/2" and then cut each of them diagonally. These corner triangles might be a little large, but it is easier to trim down than to cut on the 1/8" line. (If your finished block will be 13 inches, you would need two 10 1/4 " squares cut diagonally) Hope this helps.

Let's see if this graphic will help you. The side triangles are cut the same way for your columns as they would be for quilts set on point.

Shoot....too tiny to read, I'm sorry. If you hold down the "ctrl" button on the keyboard while using the scroll wheel on your mouse, you might be able to enlarge the print. Just reverse the direction of the scroll action to take it back to normal.
