I wound the finished binding around a large thread cone and set it on the cone holder. It stayed out of my way and was easy to handle.

MamaBear61 06-23-2010 04:40 PM

Thanks for the tip. I did one today and it was under my feet most of the time.

amma 06-23-2010 04:40 PM

Great tip, thank you :D:D:D

MadQuilter 06-23-2010 04:40 PM

Great idea. I wrap mine around an empty TP role.

Jeanniejo 06-23-2010 04:49 PM

Mine just lays on the floor but I did buy a binding holder on line at Clotilde but haven't tried it yet.

DebraK 06-23-2010 04:52 PM

haha! well, aren't you clever? I love double duty objects ;-)

PennyLynn 06-23-2010 05:02 PM

Great tip, thanks.

Moonpi 06-23-2010 05:34 PM

great idea!

Bottle Blonde 06-23-2010 05:41 PM

Great idea!! I recall reading a tip where someone used an empty paper towel roll and holder.

franie 06-23-2010 05:43 PM

I have a binder winder. Next time I use it I will take a pic of it. I never iron my binding on the fold. It is handy gadget and lays at my feet and unwinds.

kasmitty1 06-23-2010 05:52 PM

My binding goes over my shoulder onto the floor behind me. I like your idea lots better. Just curious, on your Memory Craft 6600, what is the red triangle over the "knot" button?

dgrindey 06-23-2010 06:03 PM

great idea

raptureready 06-23-2010 06:40 PM

That's a good idea. I roll mine on a toilet paper cardboard and put it on a peg board that's behind me but facing to the right. It comes off over my shoulder and right under the presser foot.

Smart lady. How much did you pay for your cone holder? I almost bought one at the sewing machine dealers yesterday when I picked up my machine, but...
He wanted $8.00 for his.

Adriane 06-23-2010 07:34 PM

Super smart!! That would keep my cats off of it, too. Thanks!

When I first got my machine and was doing fmq, I found I did much better if I used the start and stop button instead of the foot pedal. Since I wasn't used to the machine, and my eyesite isn't what it used to be I kept hitting the wrong button to stop sewing. In retrospect, I don't know why I didn't put it(the red triangle) on the start/stop button! ;-) I don't even notice it anymore, I guess I could take it off!

If I remember right, I got it at a thrift store...don't remember what I paid for it, probably about $1

Pineapple Princess 06-23-2010 08:21 PM

Are you kidding. I just improvised and made my cone holder and thread feed out of a wire hanger. It works perfectly and has for years and it didn't cost me a thing. I also don't bother winding my binding on anything because it always seems to end up in a wad in the middle of the quilt as I sew it on. So now, I just wad it up in the middle of the quilt as I sew it on and eliminate the step of winding it on something. This works for me and keeps it off the floor.

AWESOME idea - thanks for sharing!

That is a great idea. That way it not trailing on the floor with the cats and dog playing with it.

I could try to get some, but if you're following my other thread I'm not doing much sewing right now. My sewing room looks like a tornado hit it. I'm not going to be home for a while, but if I get a chance I will take a picture of it for you. It was quite easy. I just made it up to fit my situation. I'm kinda crafty that way. lucky me!?!

Debo 06-24-2010 12:47 PM

What a great idea. I use a paper towel roll but I'm going to try this.

GrammaNan 06-24-2010 01:51 PM

Necessity is the mother of all inventions, that is an inexpensive and effective idea, thanks for sharing.

My thoughts exactly. And it seems I always have a "necessity". Thank goodness for a creative mind, lol.

Great tip

craftybear 06-24-2010 06:13 PM

good tip and someone uses a paper towel holder and winds the binding on the empty holder

Kyiav10 06-24-2010 06:52 PM

Thank you all for the advice. I have some binding that I have to prepare so I started rolling it on an empty TP roll. You guys are always full of wonderfull tips!

I roll my binding up and leave a hole big enough for my hand. I put the roll of binding on wrist and let it feed as I sew, it doesn't tangle and works great.

Another way is to fold it back & forth, put it in a bag - eg a small JoAnn's bag - and hang it from a knob or hook in front of where your sewing machine is sitting. Out of the way, not on the floor.
