How I store my batting

Ok this will be the 4th time I try to post this message!!!!

Last week it suddenly struck me to use space bags to store my batting in. Now I get 4-5 times more batting in the same amount of space as without the bags. DUH, why did I not think of this before.

Don't know if any one else has problems posting. When I try to submit it freezes and says "Quilt Board has stopped responding".... Very frustrating

lfstamper 01-29-2012 06:50 PM

probably your pic is too large to post. resize it then post.

Ive never had any luck with space bags. The zipper things always break, and even if they don't, the vacuum seal always releases. I gave up on them.

yngldy 01-29-2012 07:32 PM

I have been using the spacebags for batting for a couple years now. Keeps the bugs out and doesn't take up as much space. You have to be careful when you use the zipper so that the "tab" does not cut the plastic. The colored bags don't seem to be as sturdy as the clear. The cube stores more.

What a good idea. Bought a whole roll of fluffy polyester batting......was something for u tube.....pushing, sitting and laying on that roll to get it down flatter so we could tie the huge plastic bag closed. Then after much struggling, trying to get it into the back seat of my truck. Of course, wanted to take it in the house when dh was gone and had to wait til the next morning. Yup, it sprung a leak and filled the back seat and over the seats. Thought I would never get it out and into the guest room. When my dgs entered the room, he squeeled, Grandma, a hay bale! That was over a year ago and many many quilts later, it still takes up a huge portion of the room. :-)

Murphy 01-29-2012 07:45 PM

Great idea. Thank you for this tip.

normasews 01-29-2012 07:46 PM

Wow, great idea since batting always takes so much room.

dunster 01-29-2012 08:04 PM

I've been having the same problem with posting. I notified PatriceJ, and others have also reported the problem. If you just wait (a long time, so you might want to start working in another tab or window at that point), the message will eventually go through.

This made me laugh! Kind of like the rubber raft that got inflated accidently in the middle of the living room floor!!

When tabs cut the plastic just duck tape, works like a charm

BETTY62 01-29-2012 09:00 PM

Thanks for sharing. I have not used space bags but it sounds like I should.

AnnieH 01-30-2012 01:49 AM

I had to look them up on Amazon. Looks like a great idea.

I have that problem posting sometimes too, drives me nuts.

SueSew 01-30-2012 04:00 AM

I love the story about trying to sneak in the 'hay bale'! I have done that before with large objects which could not be moved into the house under prying eyes of DH - I shudder to think that when he retires he'll have even more time to try to micro-manage me. LOL

I keep my leftover batting squished in kitchen garbage bags in the closet and stuffed between books and boxes on the closet shelves, and just yesterday I went to grab a remnant for a table runner, and what was tucked inside but a dried-up old acorn! I'd better pull it all out and find the nest!

Great idea-I use them to store rarely used clothing/extra blankets in summer, etc-but never thought of batting! I also have the same problems posting-freezes the same way about 50% of the time I try to post. Might happen this time too-we'll see!! Many suggestions were offered, (see my thread posted about it in the last week), but haven't sorted it out yet.

To ALL of you having the "Quilt Board not responding" message I was having the same thing!! and it was Driving Me Crazy!

Ditto! This had me chuckling also - thanks for the giggle :-)

lfstamper 01-30-2012 05:37 PM

Oops misread your post but haven't had the error problem yet. Good idea on space bags.

bluteddi 01-30-2012 05:47 PM

I LOVE space bags.. I use them for everything imaginable.. I even have travel space bags, that fit into the suit case and u roll the air out instead of using a vac!

Pat G 01-31-2012 06:32 AM

I tried to do a new post yest. but have no idea what happened to it. I also tried to include a pix but it didn't seem to show up either. Very frustrated with the new board.
I had an important question about how I should finish quilting a very complex Bargello quilt I'm working on. I was really relying on all of you with advice.

CarrieC 01-31-2012 06:41 AM

:) I have been there! I have used space bags for a while. When I buy a project's worth of fabric, but I'm not ready to work on it and I want to stash it away I use the smaller bags. If I get tired of a project and I want it out of the way until I can get up the patience for it - I put it and it's accompanying not cut fabric etc all in a space bag and store it away - flat, small and contained.

I highly recommend this method!!!

ghk1936 01-31-2012 07:26 AM

What is a spacebag?

urgodschild2 01-31-2012 08:34 AM

I love your idea. Right now I only have one queen size batting for my DJ quilt I am making. I love the post about the batting exploding in the car by auntpiggylpn. Too funny. I once bought some yarn and when you took the label off it grew and grew and grew. And when you worked on it, I swear the skein got bigger and bigger and it seemed like I would never use it up.

collady 01-31-2012 08:37 AM

My grandson took all my space bags when he moved off to college and has not returned them. I had gotten them for my daughter when she went to college 10 years ago and she sent them home promptly because she didn't have room to store them! LOL

I was also told to try foxfire-so DH said he will try to get it on my computer. Lets hope I have the same luck as you with it!!

Jingle 01-31-2012 12:51 PM

I use a space bag to store batting pieces in but, it sprung a leak and won't stay flat. I still use it for storage.

Olivia's Grammy 01-31-2012 01:35 PM

A lot of you love the space bags, but what happens when you take the items out? Are they permentaly wrinkled? Will the dryer smooth out the wrinkles? I've never used them bc a friend said the things she put in them came out horridably wrinled.

yesyoucan 01-31-2012 03:50 PM

I got a really cheap and easy way.I take a heavy garbage bag tighten it around the sucker part of my canister vac and suck all the air out and twist tie it.Sometimes you have to redo it but it is alot cheaper than space bags.

LadyElisabeth 01-31-2012 06:36 PM

I just keep the roll standing upright against a wall.

butterflies5518 01-31-2012 07:03 PM

I use them for my pillow forms and hadn't thought about batting! Love the description. MY DM today was talking about putting quilts in them just today and hoping for no "explosions" as she called them

That's the way I do it too. This is the best way to get all the dust out of sofa/chair cushions and throw pillows, stuffed animals, etc. Vacuum it flat and then let fluff back up.
