To answer the original question of 1/4 inch seams... on top of careful cutting and careful pressing (not ironing), I use a piece of cardboard taped to my machine to give me the 1/4 inch I need. It took a few tries to adjust it, but once set, I have no more problems.

It could also be the placement of your needle, is it left,right or center ?

I have been wondering about my own 1/4" seams. I just finished a quilt that was supposed to finish at 96 x 76 and it is 90 x 70!!!! What in the world happened there?

I found some sewing tape at the LQS. It's made for sewing triangles on the diagonal line across a square. It's 1/2 inch wide and you stitch on each side and then cut through the center. This helps me "eye" a 1/4 inch seam for straight seams too.

Try watching your guide instead of the needle. It took me forever to figure out that that was what I was doing

I still struggle with them. I am looking to buy the foot for my machine but each month something else is more important.
