Just thought of another question. If so many of you guys still work so hard at 1/4" seams, how do you make such beautiful and complicated quilts?

I tried the post it notes stacked up too. But found when I moved them to change the bobbin. OooopS! Not the same after that even though I thought, I had checked it.

I think cause it is a never ending learning process Dene. Don't think I've ever done a quilt that I haven't learned something and asking questions gives me new prospectives. So does this board and being around other quilters. always something to learn...

I have a Janome and the default needle drop position is 3.5, but to sew a 1/4 " seam I have to change the position to 4.5. Every time I turn the machine on it goes to the default needle position and I have to change the needle drop position to 4.5. It took me a long time and many hours of frustration to figure it out what was happening.

I have every 1/4 inch guide known to quilter folk and to say I've conquered the 1/4 inch seam would be a lie. I do my very best and most of the time all works well. Do not despair, you are not alone in this quest. I think my 1/4 inch quilting foot is the very best friend in my endeavors I have found. If I pay attention to what I'm doing and don't let my mind wander it works quite well.

You may be too much of a perfectionist. If you look closely at even "good" quilters piecing some seams don't match up perfectly. Also if the pattern allows try to square up or check after every grouping. Keep trying it takes a lot of practice and if you take off a month you have to start practicing all over again.

could you explain how you use the seam gauge to get a perfect 1/4"?

I use 1/4 inch foot on my machine that has helped tremendously. Also, I always cut once and measure twice. Don't give up....you will get it.

I still struggle with it after 13 years. Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm worse at cutting, piecing, or pressing. I have the best luck when I cut a little over-sized and then trim down. Just keep at it, and it will get easier.
