Every piece in this project is fused to a backing, including the background pieces. The instructions suggest quilting by sewing around the edge of each appliqued piece raw-edge applique style. I understand that part.

What I don't understand is, how do I make a quilt sandwich and fasten the layers together without making random holes in all of the applique pieces? The holes won't go away if I do. It's a small piece, 22 x 17 inches.

I'm wondering if I can use a spray on adhesive to hold the layers together while I quilt it. Any ideas about this?

that is really cute! You can sandwich it by using a spray, 505 is the best to use. Tape the backing down nice and flat, and spray it. then lay the batting on the backing, making sure it is flat with no wrinkles. then spray the batting, and lay the top on the same way. As small as it is, you will not need to use any pins :-D

Cool cat quilt. I would use basting spray. It works great on wall hangings too.
