Definitely helps (although too late for the quilt I am currently doing my own FMQing). At least I'm using soft thread...but wish I'd chosen different batting.

Get ready for the winching..lol...I use Walmart low loft polyester batting and 90" 100% cotton permanent press muslin from Walmart for the backing on all my quilts. Of course a lot of my quilts are tied but they wash up so soft and cuddly......just ask my kids and grandbabies! I wash and dry them right at home and they don't fall apart. Love the feel of them!
