How to make a quilted pillow cover

Hi Everyone!
I just finished piecing a Swoon quilt and have used my leftover half square triangles to make a pillow. My question is....how to quilt it. I'm planning on doing it by hand. Do I make a sandwich like a regular quilt or just quilt the fabric top and a layer of batting with no backing which seems like it might be too thin and difficult? Is this clear as mud?
Thank you!
Susan

Are you using a pillow form for the center? If you are using a pillow form than it will be fine just quilted to the batt. If you are planning to stuff it with loose poly fill or foam, I would put fabric on the back of the piece for quilting. The extra fabric will give it a smoother look with the lumpy filling behind it.

I prefer my pillow fronts to be quilted with a backing. That way they can be washed if need be.

Thanks so much for your replies. Very good point about being able to wash them. I will put a backing on them even though I will be using a pillow form.

Nancy thanks for posting the link to the Swoon quilt for Suzan.

It is very much like the Carpenter's Star and the Carpenter's star doesn't have the flying guess. Check both out and compare on google pictures. And there are free directions on making the Carpenter's Star.

I FMQ my pillow tops to the batting, then I sew on the backing. I stitch a zigzag all around the pillow even the opening...I made the opening part wider and sew it...then i wash it. After I wash it I then stuff it and hand sew the opening close.

I actually long armed some shams for a lady who made a matching quilt, used muslin on the back then she made an envelope sleeve opening for the pillows to fit in so she can wash them if need be, used the same quilt design as the quilt...

I just came online to post about making pillow cases with quilted tops - and here this thread is!!

I had some squares left over from a quilt that I recently made for my bed. I decided today that I could use those for the front sides of pillow cases. Or at least I am thinking I can. But, I wasn't sure if I should quilt the top to batting and backing - then use that piece as the whole front - proceeding as usual with making a pillow case. Does that turn out okay? What is the best method for doing this?
