I want to make a Kaffe Fasset St. Mark's quilt made from diamond shapes. Once I enlarge the templates, what should I use to make the actual template that I will use? I'm afraid that I would cut into posterboard, but am at a loss here. Any ideas?

Take the enlargement to a glass store and have them cut it out of plexiglass or acrylic. Make sure it is exact or your quilt will be wonky. remember both of these materials can be sanded until smooth, and also get the exact size needed. so if they cut it just a hair to big or whatever just get some super fine sand paper and sand it down.

I've made templates for other things with plastic milk jugs and they worked just fine. Just use the flat sides.

Great tips here; thanks!

Any cutable heavy plastic works well - with the absolute right-on measurements. I use plastic sheets to be used in binders/notebooks! Great cost savings!

You want to be sure that whatever you use for the template will not be easily cut (like posterboard) when you are using it, especially if it will be used repeatedly (as the hexes for GFG)
I've used the plastic lids for disposable containers fairly successfully. You do still have to be careful with your rotary cutter especially if they are fairly large pieces. |
I bought the plastic cutting mats from the Dollar Store. They are heavier than template plastic, can be cut with scissors, and last forever, and only $1 each :D:D:D

the plastic lids on coffee containers work well too for template plastic.

Wow what a great idea using cutting mats from the dollar store... Thank you.
