When you add on a border how many do you like to put and how big do you make them? Many of my quilts have them, but I rarely put more than two. A small one on the inside and a bit wider for the outer edge. I was just wondering how much you like to "frame" the main body of the project.

I like one border. Mostly because I finish the quilt top, cut the border (usually around 6"), get bored and move onto a new quilt top. So the border sits next to the quilt for a good few weeks before I finally attach it. And if it takes me that long to attach one border, I know I won't get 2+ done very quickly :)

I did one with 3 borders, and I really liked how it looked, but it's just too much focus for me

Depends on the quilt I'm making. It just tells me most of the time.

It depends entirely on the main body quilt design. There's a great free class at Quilt University on borders. http://www.quiltuniversity.com/registrar_free.htm It will really open your eyes about what borders can do for a quilt! Check it out. :-)

It depends. I often go for a narrow first border and a wider second border. When I use fabric from the center in the large border, I pick something contrasting for the narrow to really make that one pop. Have done single borders, and have done 3. Usually, the amount of fabric I have dictates the width and if piecing is required.

i'm all over the place with borders.

i've made quilts with no borders and i've made some with 7 borders.

the center of the quilt usually dictates the borders for me.

It depends on the quilt...
Sometimes its good to add borders in order to enlarge your quilt...
Sometimes its just "fun to add something more" to brighten it up....
Sometimes I don't use any border....

This! :D Except the most I've done is 3 to date. It depends on the centre like KLue says. But I have to say also that the more experienced I get (still not very! ) the more I see borders as an integral part of the design rather than something you just slap on at the end to git 'er done! And the IRR will encourage me even more in this I hope! :D

Actually, all my quilts have had no borders. I'm glad you brought this up, I'll have to do one with at least 1 border and see if I like it. But I say, it's whatever you like.

I "usually" do two - a narrow inner border and a wider outer one BUT it depends on the quilt. Like some of the others here, I kind of let the quilt tell me what it needs.
