For me, I would quilt 24/7 if I could. I work full time so I get most of my quilting done on the weekends and get frustrated if I have to stop and do something else.

moosegirl 10-04-2010 10:04 AM

I am working on projects before and after work weekdays 6hrs+
weekends 12-14hrs or longer. Time flies when you're having fun! I'm dreaming of new ideas everynight too! Moosegirl

ruthieg 10-04-2010 10:44 AM

I'm retired and quilt all of the time. I enjoy it. Many projects in the works and many in the planning stage. Every once in a while I catch up to all. Last time that happened was just 2 Christmases ago.

msariano 10-04-2010 10:47 AM

I try to sew every day a little after work. sometimes I'll use the machine, sometimes I'll have to cut fabric for hand sewing and sometimes I'm just on the computer checking out quilt sites. I must say this board is one of the fastest moving sites I've found and I really enjoy reading everything on it.

pookie ookie 10-04-2010 11:08 AM

3 hrs a wk average. Includes cutting and ironing time. :0/

joyceinoh 10-04-2010 11:33 AM

I work in my sewing room 5 or 6 days a week, I will keep going until I get tired of it, which could be 3 to 6 hours.
Or until my knee gives out. Once I start making mistakes I go find something else to do. Like those house hold chores that nobody else seems to want to do either.

There are so many factors for me...First is how I am feeling, then do I have other pressing things I need to do. When I am feeling good I try to sew at least every other day. Then the in between days are for other fun things like laundry and housework.
Sometimes when I am in the middle of a project, I try to spend some time every day on it. I just have to pace myself so I don't overdo on any day. If I do I pay for it and lose time sewing ;-)

Blanket Angel 10-04-2010 12:23 PM

Since I am retired I can sew any day and any time and that is what I do. Sometimes for several hours or until I get tired.
Sewing is what keeps me going and I love it.

natalieg 10-04-2010 12:26 PM

I stay at home and do caregiving for my MIL, she is only out of bed about 4-8 hours per day, so I am able to quilt pretty much anytime. However, I try to make sure that I get on average at least a few hours per day. Sometimes it just doesn't work because I take online classes as well, but I do try.

jolo 10-04-2010 12:54 PM

I am retired and do not have a DH so I am usually am sewing ,cutting or something pertaining to quilting. Right now my main projects are a Dear Jane, acually 2 of those. A needleturn Boston Album type and am hand quilting one. So as the mood strikes or if my breathing and back hold out most of the time at least 10 to 12 hr,/day. I am a very boring person lol.

Mousie 10-04-2010 12:55 PM

I am trying to get into a different routine. Everything keeps eating up my quilting time, then I am tired and not motivated.
So, some days I start right after breakfast and give myself about 3 hours.
Sounds like a lot, but I work very slowly due to health and vision.
Sometimes, like today, I just couldn't knuckle down due to a magnet called the post office, lol...and I was rewarded! ;)
But I will try to get my butt in gear later...hope I didn't squelch the creative energies today  :)

dorrell ann 10-04-2010 01:26 PM

I wished I had started quilting 20 years ago. I can spend all day sewing- it is my passion now!!

nitakhoops 10-04-2010 01:34 PM

It really varies...virtually no time is spent quilting in nice weather...I'm too busy around the C'mas tree farm. In the winter when it's cold and rainy, I'll often spend the entire day quilting.

Dodee 10-04-2010 01:34 PM

It all depends as both my husband and I have had some health issues for about 3 years now - seems to get worse. It's sort of funny tho' as I have a fabric nut and I'll buy a little here and a little there and today he said "you've been getting a lot sewing stuff, when are you going to start sewing?" Hmmmm That's the truth tho'. I'm anxious to get back to it, but just can seem to get started on the sewing part.

Covered in Threads 10-04-2010 01:36 PM

It all depends on the time of year and where I'm at.
During the normal time of year, I'll sew 20 minutes before going to work, during my lunch hour and for 2 hours in the evening and then when I during the weekends. Most weekends when the weather is good we are camping, gardening, hiking or just out and about.
During the holiday/craft show time of year (Aug-Dec) I'm grabbing extra sewing time on the weekend and this is where I'm truly blessed. My DH takes over the housekeeping, laundry and meals to free me up to sew even more.
During retreats (2x a years) I rarely sleep, so involved in doing what I love to do - create by sewing either by hand or machine. And let's face it, there's nothing on TV to keep any of us entertained anymore.

Arleners 10-04-2010 03:07 PM

For me it depends. I'm semi-retired. On the days I work, I barely quilt at all. That's when I surf. On days off, I try to quilt for an hour or two. However, if I get on a deadline, I can spend hours locked in my room.
Right now I'm trying to finish a quilt for a raffle on Thursday. I just have the binding and labels on the back to attach. I feel like I've been chained to my sewing chair. Today it isn't fun. When it's done, I will be happy

Maybe1day 10-04-2010 03:22 PM

One morning a week usually and one day a week every fortnight if life doesn't get in the way is my lot.

Maybe1day

Annz 10-04-2010 03:28 PM

once a week for 2 hours unless I'm lucky and can find time to do more.

Kitsapquilter 10-04-2010 03:30 PM

I don't get to spend as much time sewing as I would like. I crochet around fleece for baby blankets to sell at craft shows. My sisters take them to the shows they go to. So during the fall months I am usually very busy trying to keep up on the blankets to sell. After the first of December I am hoping to get to sew more. I have a scrappy log cabin quilt in the making and want to get it finished. The blocks are all done and just need to be laid out and sewn together. All in all right now I probably only get about 2 hours a week to sew if I am lucky!

yellowsnow55 10-04-2010 03:31 PM

I always feel as if my day is wasted if I don't get any sewing in.Even if it's only mending. Usually spend a hour or two machining or cutting and in the evenings I do my hand quilting etc. in front of the T.V. which is set on digital radio. Let's face it , not much worth watching besides the news.Don't get anything done in the mornings as I'm waiting to get some feeling back in my fingers due to M.S. Some days I don't do anything but quilting, but those are one of my rare good days and I'm sure as **** not wasting them on cleaning.

Ruby Y Campos 10-04-2010 03:40 PM

I try to sew every day--at least something. I do help my daughter with child care 2-3 days per week. They are not full or all days. The rest of the time is mine. I live alone and usually put a couple hours in evenings. When and if I watch TV, I'm at my sewing machine. I cannot just sit and watch TV. I always have a couple projects going at once, some big and some small.

GailG 10-04-2010 04:25 PM

Ive never really thought about the actual time I do sew, but I try to get in as much as I can -- depending on a lot of things like other commitments, my mood, what's going on in our life at the time. Football season is a good sewing season for me. DH watches a lot of football on TV so I work on projects. This past weekend was a good one. I worked several hours Saturday and Sunday working on a pieced back for a quilt I'm making for our DS. I did have the movie channel on in the sewing room.

weezie 10-04-2010 04:28 PM

It depends on a lot of different things, such as current season and current project(s). I spent the last two months (VERY hot weather here) staying indoors with the A/C on, making sampler blocks; I worked on them a lot every day. Even so, I still have less than half of the 111 blocks done and have not yet chosen the colors for the rest of them; however, I need to invest my time & energy in hand quilting and some yardwork for the remainder of this year. I don't spend very many hours per week on hand quilting, unfortunately, so progress there is very slow.

np3 10-04-2010 04:35 PM

Now that I am retired, I am working on my quilting projects most of my waking hours, unless life get in the way!

Davida 10-04-2010 06:23 PM

Not as much as I would like I probably get in maybe 6 hours a week mostly on weekend.

All Thumbs 10-04-2010 06:50 PM

Well, let me see here...DH has tv football games on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays--so there are full days of quilting if I wish. Then there are Guilds and sewing clubs on Monday mornings; a friend and I charity sew 4-1/2 hours on Wednesdays and my evenings can be spent in sewing room too cause DH has his nose in a periodical or paper then anyway. I am laughing all the way downstairs and loving every minute of it.

nana myra 10-05-2010 06:40 AM

I have a hard time, work 4 - 10 hour days, and seem to spend the weekend and my day off cleaning the house, etc. Have to really get back to finishing projects. Hopefully we will get to retire late next year, Hurray, camping and quilting!

Rowan8 10-05-2010 08:49 AM

Mostly at the weekend.

lizzy 10-05-2010 08:52 AM

I quilt probably 3 hours on most days. It really depends what else is going on in my life. When Mollly, my yorkiepoo is sleeping, that's when I sew. When she wakes up she reminds me that it is time to take a break. :-D
I forgot to say that being retired :-D I can sew justabout anytime I feel like quilting.

dorilou58 10-05-2010 09:15 AM

Melinda,My heart goes out to you taking care of your hubby with health problems...You have to keep your spirits up all the time and still do so much yourself...Im sure sewing helps you relax as it does for me...Keep your chin up and show us some of your work as you get it done...Take care,Dori

finch 10-05-2010 11:53 AM

I sew in spurts.Somedays I can spend almost an entire day sewing ,then I will take a break on other days to do something else.

Bev 10-05-2010 12:41 PM

If I averaged it out, it would probably amount to three hours a day. Maybe more. I usually don't notice the passage of the hours. But I DO know that there are some days when I can't quilt at all. And some days I have to sew instead of piece. That's the way it goes. Weekends my DH is home and we do things together, like gardening or go out someplace. So it's rare to get into my quilting room at all on weekends. 8-)

You are definitely my twin. I too love the planning stage, then I can't wait to get it finished. Gail

It is a gray, cool day here today and I do believe I will do some sewing today.

Amen to that. I am to tired at night to quilt.

quilterfly 10-05-2010 06:03 PM

Pretty much 24/7. I can do mostly what I want with my time. I'm so lucky to have my grown son living in my house..he does most of the housework & we rotate cooking chores. My 91-yr-old Dad lives with me too & I do have SOME responsiblity for him, but he's a quilter too, so we always have something to talk about. Those of you who are still working outside the home can look forward to the day you've earned your retirement & hopefully you'll be as lucky as I am.

sew wishful 10-05-2010 06:21 PM

Retirement is probably not going to happen here. I am 8 years older than my husband, I carry the insurance, his job doesn't even offer it. He had a pituitary tumor removed last year and is on every artificial hormone they make. He would have no wages left if he had to buy these hormones without the insurance. I could draw SS next year, but can't stop working because of the insurance. What a let down.

LOL, my DH says the same thing. *When are you going to sew something?*. Makes me soooo mad. He doesn't realize I DO sew. I have 4 quilt tops done, just waiting for quilting. 2 quilt tops and a tabletopper in the works. Plus several in the planning stage. I've finished several smaller projects, he just doesn't notice. He thinks sewing is making clothes. Always asking me to sew buttons on. GRRRRR

Thank you Dori, It gets to me mentally more so then physically. Thanks to Lynnejean here on the board, I go to her house once a week for a few hours, yet I'm only 10 minutes away if he needs me. Usually he just sleeps while I'm gone. Sewing has been my salvation and Lynnejean really motivates me. And DH encourages me to get out.

But at the same time, what else do you do? I love the guy with all my heart and would be totally lost without him. We are celebrating 23 years this month. I'm hoping we make it to 25 to celebrate our silver aniversary!

zennia 10-06-2010 05:54 AM

Usually I spend a few hours at it. Some day are better then others. If I start having brian freeze I just walk away for a while.

Elliotsgreatgrandma 10-06-2010 05:59 AM

I sew in spirts, I take time to eat eye candy and pull out all the patterns I really want to make one day then pull out my material and lay it all around or pin it on my design wall and look and enjoy until it tells me it wants to be finished. Then I cut and sew and to heck with housework. I just barely cook. I am always in one of those stages. I have finished 5 tops since May but have not done any quilting. I am now starting a hand embrodiary quilt top and hope to have it finished and quilted by December. When I get the fever it will be finished in no time. Gail
