I am wanting to cut my own jelly rolls but I don't know how many to cut. I know there are 40 strips per roll, but how many rolls are needed to make a quilt approx. 56 x 76? Are there dupplicate strips, or is each one a different print? Sorry to bother you people with such stupid questions. I have plenty of fabric and want to use some to make a jelly role quilt. I hear so much about them on this board and would like to try one. Thanks a bunch.

Depends on the pattern.

you can use one jelly roll and two packs of charm squares to make a twin size quilt

Good queation!! I"Ve been wondering the same thing( that is why I think it is a good ???! LOL I've wondered more about the placement of the strips like they would be in a roll....... I will have 24 different pastle prints and want a baby quilt about 40x60. Any suggestion girls? I"m no math whiz here, and want my stripes going vertical, will add 2 ruching strips. Any borders added will be extra.

not all jelly rolls come with 40 strips, they are usually the strips from one collection, so if there are 26 fabrics in a collection you get one 2 1/2" strip of each, so 26 fabrics. if you are going to make your own strips you can use as many or as few fabrics as you want to.
after cutting off salvages your strips (if you are lucky) will measure 40" long...it would take 30 strips to get 60" wide quilt by 40", if you want longer you would need more strips of course to add to your 40" lengths. 45 strips (cutting 15 in half to add 20 more inches to the 40 inch length will give you 60"x60".

Isn't it wonderful to have a mathematician handy. I could probably figure it out in time and by that time I could have the quilt pieced. LOL
