How many miles would my stitches reach?
My brother just called with what I thought was an 'off the wall' question about how far would all of the stitches reach that I have stitched since I began sewing 55 or so years ago. My first thought was how in the world would I know. After we joked about it for a bit my DB said I should ask my forum friends how you would go about figuring it out. So, folks, where do I start?

12 stitches to the inch...x36 per yard x however many yards in a mile....etc. Safe to say "a bunch":)
63,330 inches in a mile x 12 = 759,960 stitches in a mile. Someone else can take it from here... |
My second response to him was 'more than two'!

Wouldn't it be: 12 stitches/inch X 36 inches per yard X 146.6 yards in a mile, or 63,331 stitches per mile? (Maybe?) Where are all our Math teachers when we need them?? (My estimate is based on straight-line sewing...): sew, for every 63,331 stitches you have sewn one mile...I dare you to figure it out from there! (Because I can't!)

Let some one else figure it out. I'd rather QUILT!!

Haven't a clue, but I am sure it is alot!!!

There are approximately 63,360 stitches per mile, but the real question is--how many stitches are there in a quilt?

But that is a good question, because different thread has different thicknesses. But it might give you a ballpark figure. I think I have some spools that hold 5000 yards or 5000 meters. So that would be between 2- 3 miles, right? If I use it up, then, I can make a reasonable guesstimate of how much I've sewn. |
That's funny...I've actually estimated how many stitches were in the binding of a large quilt. I guess you just can't supress that accounting gene, lol!
