How many pairs of jeans to make a good sized lap quilt?

How many pairs of men's jeans about 36 to 40 inch waist and 30 to 34 in long will it take to make a good sized lap quilt? Any ideas? Not sure of a pattern either. Thanks!

It depends on the size of the blocks (how many seams), and the quality of the jeans. If used, you'll want to avoid the knees that are worn thin, and any stains. I would aim for 6-8 pairs and see how far that gets you. I have just used squares of varying shades, then stitched over all the seams with a twin needle. Looks neater than the rag style.

I cut out 80 squares of 8 1/2 inch by 8 1/2 inch with my square ruler.
8 across the top of quilt and 10 down
Sew double seams
I sew double seams with my stretch stitch
I also tie with pearl cotton, yarn doesn't hold up
Husband I make 3 a year for church raffles and 1 for fire dept. raffle

I started to keep the pieces from each pair of jeans separate until I was ready to use them. I sewed each stack together with some buttonhole thread.

The reason - there are a lot of shades and weights of denim - and it was helpful go me to keep them separate.

I liked to alternate lighter and darker squares on the back/denim side.

I made one quilt with used jeans. I asked friends not to throw their old jeans and by old I meant old. Even if they used themto paint and there is some paint stains on them it did not matter. The reverse side can alway be used and it provides nice color contrast. They were rather intrigued and thought I was weird. I just laughed and told them I would show them what I did with them once it was done. In a matter of 1 week I got 3 pairs and started this....

Just got a pattern or should say a pattern template using an octogon shape instead of the circle one. Add a piece of batting if desired and a piece of fabric in the middle, turn over the edges and stitch as close to the edge as you want. Similar to the cathedral look. Will be making a wood template one of these days as I know it will get a lot of use. Been collecting blue jeans for some time now. Was tired of the rag look and even though this pattern will rag somewhat, it all depends on how close I stitch to the edge on how much it will eventually rag up on me. At least I won't need to cut every inch along the seams on thisone.

Depending on the size of your block. My friend used a dozen jeans for her large lap size rag rug quilt. Just know that your quilt will be heavy since denim is heavier than cotton.

I'm planning to make a quilt w/quotations for my DGD before she goes to college. If possible, go to the local Goodwill or like store and find extra large jeans. There is a wealth of fabric available in these jeans and cheap. The ones I purchased were on the $1 rack.

My pattern calls for 6 pair of adult jeans. Cut out 8 1/2" squares using the back pockets. The cut the rest into 2" strips. Put together as a log cabin block..3 rows of strips. Makes 12 17 1/2" blocks. Add 2" sashing between the blocks and 2" border. Size will be about 60x80. For some reason I am not able to download picture.
