how many spools of thread to hand quilt fullsize quilts?
 

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before. I'm new to the board and need some quick help.

I have 2 quilt tops one is double wedding ring the other grandmothers garden both are double bed size. I'm going to have them hand quilted by an Amish woman. Today, she sent me a note asking that I bring quilting thread when I come out this Saturday (day after tomorrow) with my tops and backing. How much thread should I get?

All the help I can get is greatly appreciated.

That is a hard question to answer- as it depends on the type of quilting you are having done - is there any way to get a hold of the lady and as her how much she recommends ? Otherwise I would error on the side of caution and take a bunch :)

Thank you. I was thinking around 5 (regular size 150yd) spools. But now maybe I should take 10 and just hope for the best.

You could ask first where you buy the thread if you could return the unused thread - be sure to save the receipt.

I would err on too much, instead of not enough.

Ask her which thread she prefers working with and then ask what she recommends in the amount needed.

hI do all my quilts in hand quilting and have done both of thee quilts and l0 spools would be way to many. You should only need two spools for each quilt

It depends on how heavily you quilt...2-3 each should be good

Ditto to Pat625. I use the YLI 40 and 2-3 should be plenty.

I also use the YLI glazed cotton - I would take the large spool (1000 yds) and its only $8.....You would have stuff returned.

I quilted a king size quilt last summer - and it had ALOT of quilting on it - I used 4 spools of the gutterman glazed cotton thread. I had leftover on the 4th spool. Those spools don't have as many yds as the YLI.

Does the Amish lady have a particular type of thread she prefers? I know that I'm picky if i can be - for ex: can't stand Coats & Clark quilting thread - Gutterman is OK, but prefer the YLI..

I too, am very particular about hand quilting thread. It is best to ask the lady what she prefers to work with.

I prefer a heavier weight, like 35W. Valdani is my favorite. I bought a 500M spool of 35wt Valdani thread and I have completed 2 queen size quilts with this spool and I am pretty sure I have enough left to do one more.

But a huge variable to be considered is how heavily will they be quilted? More quilting = more thread.

I only hand quilt and using Guterman Handquilting thread I generally go through just under 2 spools. My quilting is about every 2-3 inches. So if you quilt more closely you'll want more thread. I always buy two spools and have never finished the second on Queen Size quilts. I guess if I were concerned I might buy three to be safe, but shouldn't need any more than that.
