How many stencils do you own?

Maybe I am cheap, lol. But everytime I do a quilt, I find it hard to buy a stencil to fit that particular size on a quilt. Do you buy one each time? What else do you do?

I am probably not the one you need to hear from, but I'm interested in the replies you receive. I am a newbie at the LA. Just got mine set up and will hopefully get to try it out this weekend....maybe! At this time, I have 2 Stencils, just to try them out and see how I do. I did buy them on sale, so not much $$ invested in them. I know I'll have to start off with the crawling before I can fly, but I am anxious to test my wings.

I have lots. Some I purchased others I copied from the many many quilts books I have that had stencils in them.

I have quite a few, but the big question is.... how many do I use? Honestly unless I'm hand quilting these poor stencils are just sitting here looking pretty. I have a couple border ones that have been used more than once, and even took a course on making stencils & have the roll of blue plastic & the knife to cut them. I'm lazy now.... I cut my shapes from freezer paper usually & quilt around that. The marking of the fabric is what discourages me from using the stencils.

I've bought maybe 6 stencils. You can make your own though, there's a tool that will "burn" the template materials.

I have a pile of them but have not figured out how to machine quilt with them. It is on my list for this summer.

Not many. I have plenty of books with ideas in which I can copy to make a stencil .

nativetexan 03-29-2013 08:10 AM

How do you resize a stencil?

isewman 03-29-2013 01:37 PM

I have 23 stencils. As to when I will use them again. I'm not sure. I sometimes come home with a stencil, than I wonder what I will use it for. Some stencils just cathes my eys.

I have probably 15 or so..but I will be on the look out for more! I took a Craftsy class with Cindy Needham. She uses them to design machine quilting with. She uses parts of different stencils to make her own design.

The shops around here don't carry stencils - I did take a class where we created a whole cloth quilt using stencils. Course that is now a UFO!

I have 3 purchased stencils. I sometimes use Microsoft Publisher to re-size a picture of a design I like, then print out several copies & pin them to the area I want them & sew right through the paper. Don't forget to change your needle after doing this.
