Almost all the quilts I've made have gone to Quilts for Kids. I started with the kits they send out but now I supply my own fabric. I still use a lot of their patterns but have been branching out a bit. QFK stated in a newsletter that it costs them about $50/quilt to send out a kit and then redistribute it after it is returned. They've started asking for either a cash donation or a quilt from your own stash to accompany the finished kit they send.

I hate to do it, but I'm starting to think about finding some local outlet for my donations. By the time I make the quilt, send it back, and give them a cash donation, I think it would be more cost effective to do local.

Why would you hate to do that? I think finding a local outlet for donations is a great choice. I, for one, prefer to see my donations get used locally. There are LOTS of great places to donate quilts; your local hospital, animal shelter, homeless shelter, veteran's center, women's shelter... I've even donated a quilt to the PTA, who auctioned it off and purchased books for the school library. Most of these organizations don't have special requirements, either, except for the hospital. They just request that the quilt be narrow enough to allow for easy access to the side rails of the bed.

I usually turn in around 12 per year. This year it will not be 12.

I don't make comfort quilts because anyone expects me to or asks me to, they don't. I make them because since I have become disabled, it gives me a way to feel like a contributing member of my community. That is also why I like keeping my donations local rather than sending them away to a large organization.

I think that giving locally makes a lot of sense! Don't feel bad about it! There are plenty of outlets, I'm sure.

wildyard, thank you for making these quilts. my mother is on dialysis and thought i would make her and all the other people on dialysis with her, one.
what size do you make. do you make rag or traditional. are they heavy.
would like to have these made for xmas.

I have a friend that is a Nun and she works with the poor, the last 3 years I've given her 50 to give out at Christmas.
I only have 4 done this year.
