I usually don't use a pattern. I look through magazines or places like on the internet. I usually I can pick out the squares, sometimes I put them together different then what the magazine might say. It's whatever looks easiest for me and I make it the size I want it. If I have a particular design I find it needs to be an even number of rows.

Some times I look through books or mags for some design ideas, but most quilts are simple enough to do without patterns (squares, rectangles, triangles, etc...) so except for the most intricate ones, are patterns even really necessary? How often do you use them?

I have posted a quilt or two here and the first question that always pops up is: Where did you get that pattern? Do most people piece from patterns?

I have bought a few applique patterns but also get free books from my quilt group library for patterns which I print out to keep until WHEN!!

I use patterns in books as inspirations. I often combine ideas from several books with an indea of my own into one quilt.

I could produce my quilts much faster if I would just follow a pattern! I haven't done a traditional quilt in a long time.
