I feel horrible for saying this but when I first started quilting, I had a hard time parting with what I made (I am getting a little better), now if I make a quilt with plans to give away to friend, family or charity then I do that, but for the most part I swap out my quilts on my bed. My youngest daughter who lives at home has the most quilts and she cherishes each and every one and takes very good care of them.

I am SO GLAD you talked about your cheery cherry quilt talbecloth. I have some Log Cabin blocks made with cherry fabric that I made to make into a tablecloth & I need to get on that. THANK YOU for the inspiration!!!!!

As I read your post, I thought that was me talking. Growing up, I always slept under a quilt that either one of my Grandmother's or my Mother made. I don't think I could've slept under another kind of blanket back then. The quilts gave me such comfort (especially the scrappies that I could recognize fabrics in).

I also agree with not making complicated patterns. I personally just prefer simple designs (like 9-Patch) & with all the FABULOUS fabrics out there today, my thinking is to let it do the heavy lifting. I think every quilt should have one defining feature -- the pattern or the fabric or the quilting -- but not all 3. Plus, using the neat, simple patterns on the market nowadays (like Yellow Brick Road -- my favorite -- or Turning 20) lets you make more! And more is a good thing when it comes to quilts (& fabric & chocolate).

I, too, want to have a collection of quilts that I can swap out with the seasons/holidays. I actually even have fabric for some of them. Now just to find TIME & get my knee to cooperate!

I don't give any of them away. If they end up somewhere else, that means that the person has bought them. At an average of $350 in costs to make a quilt, it would be a very expensive present to give - with no real idea as to whether it would be valued that much. So that means I keep them as if they were babies, nicely wrapped up or out on display.

My house is full of quilts, and not just on the beds. However, I probably have given away about as many as I have made over the last 29 years. I really do wish that I had started a quilting journal 'way back then. I have no idea how many quilts I have made...probably at least 150 or so?

So far, I have only made quilts for gifts. I have the fabric for a quilt to keep but haven't done anything with it yet. It just seems that there is always another gift to make.

I have kept one Christmas quilt and the rest have gone to Quilts For Kids. Except for the very first one I made. The first was a sampler quilt I made in a beginner class. I gave that one to a shelter for abused women and children. I didn't want to succumb to a desire to keep it so I deliberately made it with children's fabrics.

I don't plan to keep a lot of my quilts but I would like to make one or two more for myself. Mostly, I'm just enjoying the process of selecting fun fabrics for the quilts and recently, I've started doing FMQ on my own DSM. :)

I'm beginning to make more for us. In fact, my big summer project is a new quilt for our bed. I still make my Linus quilts every month and make some for Walter Reed every year. I display a lot of wall hangings inside the house and outside, so I always keep them. We have young grandsons and I'm thinking of making them each a quilt to have when they marry. Think that's a good idea?

I keep a lot of my quilts. I have enought to rotate on my bed each month. I do use them as spreads and cover. If someone comes along and really admires them I will give it away. I have quilts hanging all over my house. They are my comfort. I do give several away. I usually do 3-10 a year. I have done several for charity.

I keep most of them. I give to those I know will love and take care of them. Because most of what I make I love, I will not relinquish them to somebody that will sit on the bed and paint their toenails (getting nail polish all over) or somebody that will wrap themselves so tightly in then the seams pop. Just me...

I have made some 25 or 30 quilts, and I have only about 15 here at home. My kids love them though. I have given most of them away.

I keep very few of my quilts, most of given to family and friends. I also donate quilts, blocks or just tops to various charities. I kept the 2 quilts that DH and I use while watching TV when it's cold, large lap size ones for the kids to use when they stay over and a few seasonal wall hangings and table runners.

There is a large trunk filled with small to medium size quilts that were made for challenges or for my guild's quilt shows. Now when I make something for a challenge or show I decide what I'm going to do with it after the show or challange is over, either make it large enough for someone to use as a lap quilt or small enough to donate as a kid's quilt.

Sounds like I am in good company - I have yet to make a quilt for me :) All mine are made and given away ... BUT, this summer I am making one for me. Which to be honest I promised myself last year and it never happened :shock: LOL

Right now I only have a couple of the "early" quilts that made. All the others have either been gifts to family and friends, or charity quilts for local nursing homes and the pediatric unit at the hospital. I do have a couple in the works that will be ours to keep, but will continue to do charity quilts and an occasional gift quilt.

Mostly give them away. All I've kept are a couple of couch throws.

LOL, I've just found material for me!!!! I WILL make something for me!! I always felt so special in class!

All of the quilts that I haven't finnished are mine for now. I don't mean to procrastinate but it happens. I do have one BOM that I want for myself. The blocks are done and the sashing is waiting. Soon, maybe by my birthday this summer.

I make most of mine to give away but have decided that as soon as I get all of the started projects finished that I am doing at least two for my house.

I've given away over 40 quilts and kept 7 various bed sizes, 1 lap quilt and 2 wall hangings. I do a baby quilt for each new baby in the family and a house warming quilt as the young ones buy there first home. Also, comfort quilts when a family member has serious health problem.

I have been quilting about 15 years now, almost entirely self-taught from books. My first real quilt was a king-size that I made in 3 sections and joined together after quilting. It was too heavy for me to sleep under, and it was given away. The next two were lap quilts for quiet winter evenings, and we are still using the original two. I then made a complicated mariner's compass king-size duvet. It lives in the closet except for winter-time company (still can't sleep under any weight). I have made gift lap-size quilts and lots of placemats, table runners and casserole carriers, but virtually nothing makes it into my own closets. I finally joined a quilting chapter, and thank heavens for charity quilts -- finally I "have permission" to buy and make!

I do 12 quilts per year for my show. Every bed and couch in the house has a quilt on it and I have a stash of about 20 quilts to fall back on if I need a gift for someone special. All of my children and grandchildren have one or more quilts to remember me by. This is not counting my charity quilts.

Now I'm feeling like the odd one since I have such separation anxiety I just can't part with a quilt after putting so much into it. I have given a few as gifts but only to very special people. If I have somebody in mind for one when I plan it, it's theirs from the very first stitch.

I have a good friend who likes to come & we go through my closet which has stacks of runners, table toppers on the shelf as well as on hangers. She loves to refold ea. pc. as we put them back on the shelf. It's hard to justify making more to add to the stack but I just love the creative process of making them. Time to let go of some though.

I kept only my first a lap quilt - I have two more promised and then free for all - whatever I want to try/make, gonna work on that bucket list...

At the moment the only quilts I have around that I made are doll quilts. I have a bunch of them on the wall and a couple in an antique doll bed. There are nothing but store-bought quilts on beds where the kitties sleep. I think I may make one for us soon, but the one I made with the intention of leaving it in the den to use on the couch did not get used at all here because of the warm winter we had. I was thankful to have it around last month when I got word that my brother was in a Dallas hospital seriously ill. It meant I had a brand new quilt to take to him immediately. He was very appreciative. It was meant to be. It just fit a hospital bed and he was having trouble keeping warm because of his medications. It was a simple design (Jelly Roll Race) which meant that it was not so special that it might grow little legs and depart when nobody was looking. It's a shame that's a consideration, but we learned from an experience when my mom was in a hospital many years ago that it's best to remember that almost (but not quite!) everyone is honest.

I have kept many of my quilts. In case of a power outage we will be warm!!! I also have given many to family, friends,the sick and project Linus. Gosh I guess I have made many quilts in my time. I have been quilting for over 20 yrs and have never kept count. All I care is that my quilts bring confort and warmth to whoever gets them.

I have given away 95+% of mine. I have kept just a couple throws for the living room. I recently decided I need a new quilt for my king size bed and a couple queen sized ones for when we have guests. Those are the projects I am working on now. I have finished the first queen sized quilt! But, I think I have already decided to give it to my niece as a wedding gift. I dont seem to be very good at this quilt keeping thing. ;)

I have kept a few - but most are for others. I do have a couple I want to make for me - one day I'll actually do it.

I kept my first one & use it all the time, then DH wanted one of his own. Now he wants another one. Those are the only ones I've kept out of the many I've made & shipped the past two years. We have a huge family & I had to stop trying to keep up with all the babies because they're coming way too fast! For this last group, I tried burp cloths! :-)

I am working on a king size quilt for our master bedroom. I only have one other quilt that I made. It was one that I made at an Eleanor Burns retreat a few years ago. My kids, grandkids and charities have received all the rest.

I don't know how many quilts I have made but alot of them for sure. I have 2 full size ones and a a few wall hangings and thorw size ones. I can safely say I give about 95 % away.

I totally agree Char . It gives me great plaesure to present family and friends with quilts. i do alot of charity sewing / quilts also. My husband took several from my guild to Appalachia a few years ago. He brought home pictures of kids hugging the quilts and stories that made my heart happy . I am so grateful for all of the wonderful women who give of themselves to those less fortunate. May God Bless them all each and everyone !

I have kept several, probably 8 - 10, not sure. I keep one hanging in the dining room, one in the living room, one on the sofa in the den, a wall hanging size on the window in my front door, etc. I change them around depending on the season. Also, I usually keep a quilt for a while and display it before I send it home with someone, just because I really like looking at them all finished. My quilts are usually given away before they are finished, but it may be a while before it goes home with them.

I have given most of mine away I did make me a spring one and now working on a winter one for myself.

Last year I made 12 quilts throw or larger sized. I kept 3 for our immediate family.

I have several throws that my mom made, but as for me, I am just finishing up my second quilt for me to keep since 1984!

Most of my quilts have gone to other homes as gifts. I have only made about a dozen quilts to date and have a lap quilt that stayed and a French Braid that ended up being larger and than intended and ended up on my own bed. I can see myself donating quilts in the future. To me they are an expression of love and ment to be given.

That's a hard one. I made all the quilts for my family. 50% in six years. We each have at least two, winter weight and summer autum weight. I think ten percent is sold and the last forty percent is given to relatives.
